Cape Town City Centre: Health & Safety Officer

My client is seeking a hands-on, solutions-driven Health & Safety Officer who can operate confidently in fast-paced construction environments. This role requires someone proactive, energetic, and unafraid to get onto site, assess risks immediately, and implement controls before problems escalate. Ideal Background: Civils construction, structural steel, or mechanical installation background Comfortable overseeing scaffolding, working at heights, hot work, confined spaces, lifting operations, etc. Familiar with high-pressure shutdown environments Strong situational awareness and quick decision-making Practical mindset not a clipboard-only safety officer Duties: Daily site inspections and hazard identification Enforce compliance with OHS Act, Construction Regulations, and client requirements Review and implement safe work procedures, method statements and risk assessments Monitor scaffolding erection and certification Ensure hot-work permits, working-at-heights permits, and all task-specific permits are in place Conduct toolbox talks and safety briefings Investigate incidents/near misses and implement preventative measures Ensure contractor and subcontractor compliance Maintain safety files and documentation Support shutdown execution from 12 Dec 3 Jan Requirements: Minimum 24 years experience as a Safety Officer (construction/HVAC/civils) SAMTRAC or equivalent qualification Strong knowledge of OHS Act, Construction Regulations, SANS standards Physically fit, energetic and accustomed to fast-paced site work Valid drivers licence and own transport Available for the December shutdown period Hiring Process: The December shutdown in Somerset West will serve as a practical onboarding and assessment period. Strong performance will lead to a permanent appointment.
