Turn Job Listings into a Career Skills Plan

A career plan becomes more useful when it is tied to repeated requirements in real vacancies. Use job listings as evidence, not as a promise that one course guarantees employment.

Choose a target cluster

Select two or three related roles rather than one exact title. Save current vacancies and note the outcomes, tools, qualifications, experience and location repeated across them.

Create a gap table

Mark each requirement as proven, practised but unproven, learning now, or not relevant. Prioritise gaps appearing across many genuine vacancies. A scarce but optional tool should not automatically outrank a basic requirement repeated everywhere.

Build evidence

Use a work sample, volunteer outcome, personal project, assessment, reference or portfolio explanation that demonstrates the skill. Protect confidential information and do not present team work as entirely your own.

Review monthly

Re-run the same searches, note changing tools and remove requirements that were only found once. Track applications and interview feedback. Change the plan when the market evidence changes.

Avoid course-selling traps

No course can honestly guarantee employment. Verify the provider, accreditation where claimed, total cost, cancellation terms and whether employers in your target field actually value the credential.
