CORE PURPOSE OF JOB
The Department of Computing Sciences (CS) is looking to fill a position of Lecturer within the department with an enthusiastic, forward-thinking person who will contribute to the vision and mission of the Department. The field of Computing Sciences includes Computer Science and Information Systems. There are three key areas of performance that academic staff members in the department need to meet, namely: 1) learning and teaching; 2) engagement and 3) research generally focused within the Department’s research areas (descriptive topics available upon request).
The main purpose of this post is therefore to facilitate and administer the learning process for students in modules presented by the Department at both Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels in either the disciplines of Information Systems or Computer Science, to supervise junior Postgraduate students, to be involved in research activities and regularly publish on such research and to contribute to community engagement.
The appointee will be expected to especially play a key role in administering and teaching of the different Computing Fundamental (Computer Literacy) modules in the department – with over 3000 students. This will be the main learning and teaching responsibility.
KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS
Learning and Teaching
• Facilitate learning and teaching for assigned module(s) in accordance with principles of good teaching practice, which includes material development, engaging with students and module administration; especially for the Computing Fundamental (Computer Literacy) modules.
• Lead in the development and review of new modules/curricula;
• Mentor junior colleagues;
Represent the Department at relevant Faculty and University learning and teaching forums
Research
• Provide research supervision to Postgraduate students;
• Manage research projects for the Department;
• Regularly generate research outputs for publication in the Department’s research areas;
• Generate and manage third stream income (for example, in the form of research grant applications and awards) for use in independent and Departmental research projects; and
• Represent the Department at relevant Faculty and University research forums.
Engagement
• Lead in the initiation of Departmental engagement activities, which could include engagement with schools, industry and other external stakeholders; and
• Represent the Department at relevant Faculty and University engagement forums.
CORE COMPETENCIES
• Related and relevant experience in the field of Computer Science or Information Systems.
• The ability to apply theoretical concepts to practical examples.
• Experience in participating in and managing collaborative team projects.
• Evidence of the ability to supervise Postgraduate students at Honours level.
• Evidence of the ability to produce research outputs.
REQUIREMENTS
• Lecturer
• A Masters degree in Information Systems or Computer Science.
• Minimum of 2 years’ relevant or related working experience in the field of Information Systems or Computer Science.
• The following will be an added advantage:
• Publication outputs in accredited journals/at discipline conferences in the area of Information Systems or Computer Science.
• Experience of the teaching, management and administration of large (over 1000) student groups

Note: Shortlisted candidates will be required to demonstrate a sound knowledge of chosen topics in Information Systems or Computer Science by:
• participating in an assessment related to a selected topic in Information Systems or Computer Science.
• presenting a lecture on a topic of the interview panel’s choosing
