Salary research without invented numbers

How to Research a Fair Salary in South Africa

A useful salary expectation is a researched range tied to the actual role, location, seniority and package, not a number copied from one advert. JVR Jobs does not publish a universal salary figure where the source data cannot support it.

Start with the work, not the title

Write down the decisions, tools, qualifications, responsibility, team size, targets and risk carried by the role. Two vacancies with the same title can have very different scope. Compare adverts only after you have matched those duties.

Build a defensible range

Use several attributable sources: current vacancies that disclose pay, reputable salary surveys, collective agreements or sector determinations where relevant, and conversations with recruiters who place the same occupation. Record the source date and whether each figure is base pay, total cost to company, commission or an hourly rate.

Adjust the comparison

Check province and travel requirements, scarce skills, years of directly relevant experience, shift or standby work, contract length, benefits and performance pay. Do not treat an advertised maximum as the likely offer, and do not compare monthly take-home pay with annual cost to company.

Prepare the conversation

Give a range and explain the evidence behind it. Ask what is included, how performance pay works, when remuneration is reviewed and whether the vacancy has a fixed budget. Keep personal expenses separate from the market value of the work.

Red flags

Be cautious when pay is described as unlimited but the base is hidden, when you must pay to obtain the job, or when deductions and targets cannot be explained in writing.
