Job Description
Our client, operating in the FMCG wholesale fresh food distribution sector, is seeking to employ an Operations Controller to join their team based in Port Elizabeth.
Working hours: 06:30 15:30.
Requirements
-
A valid drivers licence and own reliable transport.

Degree or Diploma in Logistics, Operations Management, Business Management, or a similar qualification.
-
Minimum of 25 years experience in operations, logistics, or wholesale environments.
-
Experience within fresh produce, food distribution, FMCG, or hospitality supply is highly advantageous.

Strong understanding of:
-
Logistics and distribution.
-
Warehouse and packhouse operations.
-
People management.
-
Responsibilities:
Overall Business Operations
-
Manage the day-to-day running of the business with minimal owner involvement.
-
Ensure all operational functions run smoothly, efficiently, and profitably.
-
Act as the primary point of accountability for overall operational performance.
Customer Service and Order Fulfilment
-
Ensure customer orders are:
-
Accurately processed.
-
Correctly packed.
-
Delivered on time and in full.
-
-
Proactively manage customer relationships and resolve issues or complaints.
-
Maintain service levels expected within the hospitality and retail sectors.
-
Monitor order accuracy, shortages, credits, and returns.
Packhouse and Preparation Operations
-
Oversee packhouse and preparation teams to ensure:
-
Efficient workflow.
-
Correct handling of fresh produce.
-
Minimal waste and shrinkage.
-
-
Ensure daily production targets are met.
-
Identify and resolve bottlenecks in packing and dispatch.
-
Implement process improvements where required.
Logistics and Dispatch
-
Coordinate daily delivery schedules and routing.
-
Ensure vehicles are loaded correctly and depart on schedule.
-
Monitor delivery performance and driver conduct.
-
Liaise with logistics providers or internal drivers where applicable.
People Management
-
Lead, manage, and motivate operational staff.
-
Ensure teams clearly understand expectations, standards, and daily priorities.
-
Handle staff scheduling, performance management, and discipline where required.
-
Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
Health, Safety, and Compliance
-
Ensure the packhouse and working environment are:
-
Clean.
-
Organised.
-
Compliant with health, safety, and food-handling standards.
-

Maintain accurate records relating to:
-
Health and safety.
-
Cleaning schedules.
-
Operational procedures.
-
-
Ensure compliance with company policies and relevant regulatory requirements.
Administration and Reporting
-
Maintain accurate and well-organised operational records.
-
Monitor key operational KPIs, including service levels, waste, and productivity.
-
Assist with stock control and operational cost management.
-
Support invoicing processes, billing checks, and order accuracy.
-
Work closely with finance and administration teams to ensure accurate documentation and minimal billing errors or disputes.
-
Monitor business performance against company goals and targets, including service levels, efficiency, waste, and delivery performance.
-
Take ownership of operational KPIs and drive corrective actions where targets are not being met.
-
Report operational risks, issues, improvements, and progress against goals to the owners.
