About the Role
Join our team as a Field Guide at our renowned Big 5 safari lodge in Pongola, KwaZulu-Natal, where you’ll have the opportunity to grow your career in hospitality and eco-tourism while delivering exceptional guest experiences.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct engaging and professional game drives and safari activities
- Ensure guest safety at all times in an unfenced Big 5 wilderness setting
- Provide accurate interpretation of wildlife, ecology, tracking, and conservation
- Adapt guiding style to align with guest interests and expectations
- Maintain warm, professional, and memorable guest interactions
- Adhere to reserve rules, wildlife-viewing protocols, and conservation principles
- Promote environmental awareness and responsible tourism
- Support conservation initiatives and required data collection
- Carry out pre-drive vehicle checks and maintain equipment functionality
- Maintain clear, professional radio communication
- Respond appropriately to emergencies or wildlife-related incidents
- Care for vehicles, equipment, radios, and guiding resources
- Participate in daily briefings, sightings updates, and debriefings
- Assist with bush walks, photographic safaris, or night drives where qualified
- Collaborate with trackers, colleagues, and lodge departments professionally
Requirements
- Strong knowledge of wildlife, ecology, tracking, and conservation
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with multiple tasks
- Physical fitness and ability to withstand outdoor conditions
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record
- Experience working with guests in a similar role
Qualifications
- Formal education in a relevant field (e.g. biology, ecology, zoology)
- Relevant guiding or tourism experience
- First aid certification
- Valid tracking and wildlife management certifications
