The Construction Mentor is responsible for guiding, supporting, and developing the skills of apprentices, junior employees, and less-experienced construction workers within the organization. The mentor provides hands-on training, advice, and leadership to ensure that mentees improve their technical knowledge, workmanship, safety practices, and overall understanding of the construction industry. The goal of the Construction Mentor is to foster growth, promote best practices, and help build a capable and skilled construction workforce.

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY.

Training and Development:

• Provide one-on-one and group training sessions to apprentices, junior workers, and trainees on various aspects of construction work, including carpentry, masonry, plumbing, electrical, and other trades.
• Share technical knowledge and teach construction skills such as blueprint reading, material handling, use of tools and equipment, and safety protocols.
• Offer guidance on industry best practices, building regulations, and construction standards, ensuring mentees understand and comply with these requirements.

Project Support:

• Oversee mentees’ work on construction projects, providing feedback on techniques, performance, and areas for improvement.
• Ensure that mentees adhere to construction timelines, quality standards, and site safety rules.
• Monitor and assist mentees in the completion of tasks, ensuring that work is performed efficiently and to a high standard.

Mentorship and Coaching:

• Build positive and supportive relationships with mentees, providing career advice, motivation, and guidance on overcoming challenges in the construction industry.
• Help mentees develop problem-solving skills and encourage them to take initiative on the job site.
• Provide constructive feedback on mentees’ performance and work ethic, addressing any skill gaps or areas that require improvement.

Health and Safety Oversight:

• Ensure that mentees are trained in and consistently follow health and safety protocols, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and tools.
• Conduct regular safety briefings and toolbox talks to reinforce safety culture on-site.
• Report any safety concerns or incidents to the appropriate supervisors or safety officers.

Reporting and Progress Tracking:

• Document the progress of each mentee, including their skill development, job performance, and areas of improvement.
• Provide regular updates to the Project Manager or Training Manager on the effectiveness of training and the readiness of mentees to take on more advanced tasks.
• Identify further training or certification opportunities that may benefit the mentees’ career growth.

Fostering a Positive Learning Environment:

• Encourage a culture of continuous learning and professional development among mentees.
• Promote teamwork and collaboration among the trainees, ensuring they develop strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• Serve as a role model, demonstrating professionalism, strong work ethic, and a positive attitude toward construction work.

• Promote relationships with the Client and the Contractor.
• Ensure that all verbal instructions are confirmed in writing.
• Conduct regular site meetings and keep an accurate record of such meetings.

EDUCATION, LANGUAGE & QUALIFICATIONS

• Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent; certification or vocational training in a construction trade is preferred.

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

• Experience in the construction industry, with hands-on experience in one or more trades (carpentry, masonry, electrical, plumbing, etc.).
• Prior experience in a supervisory or mentoring role is highly desirable.
• Strong technical knowledge of construction processes, materials, and equipment.
• In-depth understanding of health and safety regulations and practices on construction sites.
• Excellent leadership, coaching, and communication skills.
• Ability to assess skills and performance, providing clear and actionable feedback.
• Patience and the ability to work with individuals of varying skill levels and backgrounds.
