A Qualified Diesel Mechanic in the Bus and Truck Industry is responsible for maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing diesel engines and associated mechanical systems. The job specifications generally cover technical skills, qualifications, and essential duties, as outlined below:

Key Responsibilities:
Engine Maintenance and Repair:
Inspect, diagnose, and repair diesel engines.
Perform routine maintenance such as oil changes, lubrication, and fluid checks.
Overhaul and repair engines, transmissions, and drivetrains.
Test and adjust engine performance using specialized tools.
Diagnostic Work:
Use diagnostic software and equipment to troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
Inspect brake systems, steering mechanisms, wheel bearings, and other essential parts.
Electrical Systems:
Diagnose and repair electrical issues, including alternators, starters, and batteries.
Install and repair wiring, lighting, and control systems.
Hydraulic and Pneumatic Systems:
Repair and maintain hydraulic lifts, brakes, and other related systems.
Test and repair air brake systems, ensuring compliance with safety standards.
Chassis and Suspension Systems:
Diagnose and repair suspension and steering systems.
Replace worn-out or defective components such as ball joints, shock absorbers, and bushings.
Compliance and Safety:
Ensure compliance with safety regulations and environmental standards.
Maintain accurate records of services performed, parts used, and inspections.
Perform preventive maintenance according to manufacturer guidelines.
Collaboration and Communication:
Work closely with other mechanics, drivers, and fleet managers to ensure vehicles are properly maintained.
Communicate with suppliers for parts ordering and ensure proper inventory management.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Formal training in diesel mechanics from a recognized institution (e.g., technical school or apprenticeship program)
Certifications:
Certification from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) in diesel engines, brakes, or other relevant areas is often preferred.
Commercial Drivers License (CDL) may be required or considered an advantage.
Safety certifications (e.g., Occupational Health and Safety Act, first aid, etc.).
Experience:
At least 3-5 years of hands-on experience in diesel engine repair, especially in buses or heavy trucks.
Familiarity with diagnostic tools and software used in the diesel industry.
Skills:
Strong problem-solving skills to diagnose and repair engine issues.
Ability to use hand and power tools as well as specialized equipment.
Understanding of mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems.
Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and repair guides.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to lift heavy objects (up to 50 pounds) and stand for extended periods.
Manual dexterity and ability to work in tight spaces.
Willingness to work in various environments (e.g., indoors, outdoors, or in loud and busy garages).
