About the Role
We are seeking an experienced debtors professional to join our team as a Senior Debtors Controller. As part of our national wholesale and distribution organisation based in Durban, you will be responsible for managing and controlling a high-volume debtors’ book, ensuring timely collection and accurate allocation of payments. With strong leadership ability and a passion for cash flow optimisation, we are looking for a commercially astute individual with excellent credit risk management capability.
Key Responsibilities
- Full management and control of the debtors’ book, ensuring timely collection and accurate allocation of payments
- Oversee daily receipting, payment allocations, discounts, and order releases in line with credit policies
- Proactively manage overdue accounts, reducing debtor days and minimising bad debt exposure
- Assess and approve credit applications and credit limit increases within delegated authority
- Liaise with credit insurers, credit bureaus, attorneys, and internal stakeholders on risk-related matters
- Monitor insured limits, manage cover reductions or withdrawals, and handle insurance-related queries
- Supervise, guide, and manage a team of debtors clerks to ensure performance and compliance
- Prepare and submit accurate weekly and monthly debtors reports to management
- Ensure compliance with internal credit policies, insurer requirements, and audit standards
- Support year-end processes, including provisions for bad debts and audit preparation
Requirements
- Relevant qualification in Finance or Accounting
- Minimum 3- 5 years’ experience in a senior debtors, credit control, or similar role
- Proven experience managing and leading a debtors or credit control team
- Strong working knowledge of credit risk management, credit insurance, and credit bureaus
- Experience within wholesale, distribution, FMCG, or a similar high-volume environment
- Strong analytical, reporting, and communication skills
- Ability to work under pressure and meet strict deadlines, particularly at month end
Qualifications
- Relevant qualification in Finance or Accounting
- Minimum 3- 5 years’ experience in a senior debtors, credit control, or similar role
