Job Description

Scope of Responsibilities (not limited to):

  • Personnel Supervision & Operations:
  1. Supervise workshop and/or field personnel on day-to-day tasks.
  2. Ensure work is completed to standard, on time, and within scope.
  3. Oversee and support mechanical and technical repair work.
  4. Monitor and sign off on the completion of PDI documents for new and second-hand machines.
  5. Review and sign off daily tool room documents (e.g., picking lists, stock take sheets).
  6. Enforce compliance with safety, quality, and operational procedures.
  7. Manage resources, tools, and materials required for job execution.
  8. Provide frequent updates to management on production and operational matters.
  9. Immediately report any production delays or issues to relevant managers.
  10. Plan jobs, allocate tasks, and provide hands-on assistance where required.
  11. Train, mentor, and evaluate workshop staff and apprentices.
  12. Ensure daily housekeeping and maintenance of the workshop/site environment.
  • Safety Compliance:
  1. Achieve 80%+ adherence to health, safety, and environmental regulations and promote zero workplace accidents.
  2. Conduct daily documented toolbox talks with workshop staff (focus on PPE, hazard ID, safety practices, etc.).
  3. Conduct regular inspections and/or audits for compliance with safety legislation (NEMA, Waste Act, Air Quality Act, etc.).
  4. Proactively inspect tools and equipment to ensure 100% operational safety.
  5. Report safety issues or unsafe equipment to relevant managers within 24 hours.
  6. Serve as Section 8.2 appointee, supporting OHSA compliance and assisting the HSE team.
  • Quality Control and Continuous Improvement:
  1. Enforce high-quality control standards to improve Fix Right First Time (FRFT) rates.
  2. Inspect all new and repaired equipment to ensure 100% compliance with OEM standards.
  3. Lead continuous improvement initiatives and ensure prompt resolution of identified issues.
  4. Ensure accuracy and compliance in all workshop documentation.
  5. Conduct daily PPE inspections and enforce usage.
  6. Recommend, implement, and track process or operational improvements
  • Customer Relations:
  1. Resolve customer complaints/inquiries within 24 hours or provide clear feedback.
  2. Provide on-site technical support with strong focus on customer satisfaction and product quality.
  • Training and Development:
  1. Promote internal and external training opportunities for team development.
  2. Encourage ongoing technical skills development across the team.
  • Standby and After Hours:
  1. Participate in standby rotation, ensuring 30-minute on-call response times.
  2. Ensure 100% standby availability Monday to Sunday or as per the standby roster .
  • Hands-on and Technical Tasks:
  1. Lead by example in hands-on tasks to reduce breakdown response times.
  2. Ensure PDIs are completed and signed off on schedule with 100% compliance .
  • Equipment Maintenance and Safety:
  1. Perform and/or assist with monthly inspections of all equipment to ensure safety compliance.
  2. Verify quality inspections and documentation are completed before equipment leaves the premises.
  3. Inspect all lifting equipment regularly, ensuring 100% certification and immediate reporting of defects.

  • Plan, coordinate, allocate, and supervise daily work assignments.
    Monitor progress and perform quality checks on completed work.
  • Provide hands-on support with repairs, fabrication, servicing, and maintenance.
  • Enforce compliance with Health and Safety regulations and safe work practices.
  • Coordinate with internal departments to ensure job completion.
  • Maintain accurate records (job cards, timesheets, parts used, reports).
  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues in workshop and on-site.
  • Manage tool/equipment use, maintenance, and PPE compliance.
  • Monitor inventory and request materials as required.
  • Provide performance feedback and disciplinary support to management.
  • Train and mentor staff to support skills development.
  • Represent the company professionally at all times.
  • Participate in toolbox talks, meetings, and planning sessions.
  • Perform additional duties as requested by Management.
  • Assist with enforcing company policies and addressing discipline-related matters.

Skills:

  • Strong technical knowledge (mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems).
  • Proven leadership, planning, and supervisory skills.
  • Excellent problem-solving, decision-making, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to read/interpret technical drawings and instructions.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Computer literacy, especially in Microsoft Office and job tracking systems.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to quality control.
  • Ability to lead by example and maintain discipline.
  • Sober habits and mature demeanor.
  • Strong multitasking and prioritization skills.
  • Hands-on ability and operational flexibility.
  • Willingness to work extended hours when required.
  • Capable of working independently and collaboratively.
  • Knowledge of OEM standards and workshop tools/equipment.
  • Excellent understanding of Health & Safety legislation, implementation, and enforcement.
  • Commitment to complete all required iComply training within 12 months. (Refer to Training List and Prospectus)

Qualifications:

  • Grade 12 (Matric).
  • Trade-tested artisan (Mechanical / Millwright / Fitter / Boilermaker or equivalent).
  • 3 – 5 years’ experience in a supervisory workshop or field service role.
  • Health, safety, and supervisory/management training completed.
  • Valid Code 14 Driver’s License.
  • Exposure to Section 8.2 Health & Safety requirements or relevant training.
  • Willingness to travel locally and internationally.
  • Self-motivated and committed to staying up to date on relevant legislation, standards, procedures, processes and or guidelines.
  • Completion of formal health and safety programs related to workshop management.

Working Conditions:

  • Monday to Friday, with weekend/public holiday work as required.
  • Overtime and standby may be required.
  • Work in indoor (workshop) and outdoor (site) environments.
  • Travel to customer sites and remote locations may be necessary.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be physically and medically fit to perform supervisory and manual tasks.
  • Mobility to attend meetings, perform inspections, and provide technical support.
  • Reliable attendance and timekeeping required.
  • Professional image and adherence to PPE at all times.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of staff and external clients.
