Job Description

Hospitality and Outdoor – Ecological Monitor Kwa-Zulu Natal The Ecological Monitor will form part of a dedicated conservation and ecological monitoring team. The role focuses on wildlife monitoring, ecological data collection, volunteer coordination, and field‑based conservation duties. The position follows a six‑week rotational cycle between two camps and requires strong organisational skills, field competency, and an interest in ecological research. Requirements Sound knowledge of Maputaland and Zululand ecosystems. Strong computer literacy. Valid Code 8 driver’s licence with PDP. 4×4 or wilderness driving experience preferred. Minimum FGASA Level 1 or BSc in Conservation Biology, Wildlife Management, Ecology, or related field. First Aid Level 1 (minimum). Rifle competency certificate and SAPS registration advantageous. Previous wildlife conservation or ecological monitoring experience beneficial. Experience tracking or walking in a Big 5 reserve preferred. Skills & Competencies Strong management and coordination abilities. Ability to manage conflict professionally. Calm and composed under pressure. Excellent communication skills, especially with volunteers and team members. High attention to detail and strong organisational skills. Positive work ethic and team‑oriented mindset. Ability to work independently and in remote environments. Key Responsibilities Volunteer Coordination & Camp Management Manage volunteer programmes, including accommodation, vehicles, and daily logistics. Supervise volunteers and students during monitoring activities. Ensure the cleanliness and upkeep of volunteer camps. Oversee food orders, supply management, and general camp maintenance. Ecological Monitoring & Data Collection Conduct daily monitoring of key species such as elephant, lion, cheetah, white and black rhino, buffalo, pangolin, and other priority wildlife. Perform radio‑tracking using telemetry as required. Assist with camera trapping, drive counts, and other ecological surveys. Support the conservation team with the collection of biological samples. Assist students and external researchers with in‑field data collection. Sample Collection Participate in the collection of ecological and biological samples during wildlife immobilisations. Support sample gathering and data processing for research partners. ID Kit Management Compile and maintain species identification kits. Update records and ensure accuracy for use in monitoring programmes. Provide supportive assistance to conservation management teams.
