Job Description
Hire Resolve’s client is seeking a Senior Customs Controller to oversee all activities related to SARS Customs, Transnet, and other relevant government agencies. The successful candidate will ensure that customs protocols are followed and compliant with regulations. This role requires managing all documentation, tariff classifications, and customs-related processes to ensure efficient and accurate import/export operations.
Top Responsibilities:
Customs & Compliance Management:
- Ensure adherence to customs protocols and compliance with SARS, Transnet, and other government agency regulations.
- Monitor tariff classifications and customs duties for import/export shipments.
- Stay updated on the NCAP (New Customs Act Programmed) and implement changes effectively.
Documentation & Reporting:
- Review and ensure accuracy of all customs-related documentation, including EDI submissions to SARS.
- Process and submit internal appeals to SARS when necessary and manage deferment reconciliations.
- Prepare monthly deferment forecasting and submit cargo dues through relevant systems (e.g., Shipshape).
Operational Efficiency & Quality Control:
- Multi-task and prioritize entries, ensuring accurate and timely submissions to SARS and other entities.
- Oversee the registration of shipments and the completion of Bills of Entries (Import/Export).
- Conduct quality checks for submitted information to ensure compliance with SARS specifications.
Engagement & Collaboration:
- Liaise with 3rd-party service providers to obtain freight rates and manage import permits.
- Collaborate with internal departments to ensure smooth logistics and customs processes.
- Work with Shipshape to implement system updates and improvements based on NCAP changes.
Customs Documentation & Certification:
- Process VOCs, Customs Refunds, and Acquittals, and assist with certificates such as EUR1, SADC, and GSP.
- Handle the application of import/export permits and ensure compliance with the Import/Export Control Act.
Qualifications & Experience:
Education:
- Minimum requirement: Grade 12 or equivalent.
- A degree or professional certification in logistics or customs management is preferred.
Experience:
- At least 4-5 years of experience in customs management and clearing and forwarding (imports/exports).
- Strong knowledge of shipping documents, tariff headings, and valuation methods.
- Familiarity with compliance regulations in commodity trading and customs-related rules.
- Experience with the Shipshape system is essential, while knowledge of Epicor is a bonus.
