Job description Laboratory Assistant Job Description The Laboratory Assistant reports to the Laboratory Manager. His/her role is to function in all matters pertaining to the operation and of the laboratory and includes the following: Ensure the workplace is always neat and clean ie A place for everything, and everything on its place Ensure safety standards are in place and implemented Conduct QC testing on production batches in process Attend to Customer Complaints and comply with all procedure requirements Manage and maintain the process for Retention Sampling Calibrate laboratory equipment and maintain the register(s) Inform the Laboratory Manager when to replenish laboratory reagents, glassware and other utensils Conduct QC testing on raw materials and final product. Assist with R&D work as may be required Identify training needs for factory staff Identify new/improved test methods and/or equipment in order to keep the Company at the forefront of development Job specific activities: 1. Time Management – a. Attend the Production Planning meeting at 07:30 each morning b. Familiarise yourself with the workload for the day and plan accordingly c. Know what jobs Production staff are busy with and where the work pressures are 2. Quality Control – a. Check all samples coming to the lab as soon as possible b. Test and monitor water quality on a daily basis c. Ensure customer complaints are handled and resolved in the shortest possible time d. Prompt Mixers to promptly submit samples where in-process testing is required e. Calibrate the pH meter on 2-weekly basis and maintain the register f. Ensure job cards are signed by Mixers and filled out correctly g. Pay attention to detail. 3. House Keeping- a. Ensure the laboratory is left clean, tidy and safe at the end of each working day b. Oversee daily/weekly cleaning of the laboratory in accordance with the Cleaning Schedule c. Report all safety and maintenance matters to the Production Manager Qualification and experience: A formal qualification in chemistry is required (BSc or HND) A minimum of 3 Years experience in industrial chemicals and personal care products would be beneficial. A good knowledge of Quality Management Systems such as ISO 9001 and SABS would be beneficial.
