About the Role
The Estimator will prepare accurate cost estimates for mechanical and piping projects in Durban, analysing drawings, specifications, materials, and labour to ensure competitive, market-aligned bids while maintaining profitability. This role involves close collaboration with the operations manager and Director, requiring strong communication and analytical skills.
Key Responsibilities
- Review project plans, specifications, and site conditions to perform quantity take-offs for piping and mechanical related scopes.
- Develop detailed cost estimates, including labour, materials, equipment, subcontractors, and overheads; incorporate value engineering to meet client budgets.
- Prepare bid documents, RFPs and proposals, coordinate with engineering, procurement, and construction teams for inputs on technical and commercial parameters.
- Maintain estimating databases, productivity rates, escalation indices, and historical cost data; analyse bid vs. actual costs for process improvements.
- Support risk assessments, kick-off meetings, and post-bid analysis; liaise with clients and suppliers for clarifications and pricing.
- Actively source and identify new work opportunities to price, including reviewing tender portals, networking with clients/suppliers, and pursuing leads in Durban’s mechanical/piping market.
Requirements
- National Diploma or Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Quantity Surveying, or related field.
- 5 years’ experience as a Mechanical/Piping Estimator in construction or engineering, with a proven track record.
- Strong knowledge of piping materials, mechanical systems, construction methods, and South African standards (e.g., SANS).
