Job Description

A unique opportunity exists for an experienced General Manager to take full operational leadership of a well-established commercial hunting lodge in the Eastern Cape. This role requires a hands-on, commercially astute leader who can confidently manage hospitality; tourism, and hunting operations within a remote lodge environment. This is a senior; on-site leadership role with full day-to-day operational accountability, allowing ownership to focus on strategic and investment matters. The successful candidate will balance operational discipline with guest experience excellence, ethical hunting practices, and sustainable tourism. The Role As General Manager, you will assume full responsibility for the entire operation ; including hospitality services, tourism activities, commercial hunting operations, financial oversight, asset care, and people leadership. You will lead a small, multi-skilled team and ensure consistently high standards across all areas of the lodge. Key Responsibilities Operational Leadership Take full accountability for daily lodge operations across hospitality, tourism, and hunting Implement and maintain effective systems, controls, and schedules suitable for a remote environment Ensure legal, ethical, and regulatory compliance across all operations Provide regular operational and performance reporting to ownership Hospitality & Guest Experience Oversee end-to-end guest experience for tourists and hunters Maintain high standards of food & beverage service, housekeeping, and cleanliness Manage accommodation capacity and balance tourism and hunting requirements Ensure facilities and public areas are consistently well presented and maintained Tourism Operations Develop and manage on-site tourism offerings such as game drives, guided walks, birding, and conservation experiences Leverage the propertys geography to enable concurrent tourism and hunting activities Build relationships with tour operators and regional tourism partners Oversee tourism marketing tools including website content and social media positioning Commercial Hunting Operations Directly supervise the Head of Hunting Operations Ensure hunting activities are ethical, compliant, sustainable, and commercially viable Oversee hunting profitability, cost control, animal sourcing, and operational planning Ensure hunting operations integrate seamlessly with hospitality and tourism Financial & Commercial Management Monitor operational expenditure and revenue performance Contribute to budgets, forecasts, and commercial planning Develop and implement hospitality and tourism growth strategies Compile CAPEX proposals where required Leadership & People Management Lead; motivate, and develop a team of approximately 14 staff Maintain a calm, structured, and professional working environment Address performance issues decisively and constructively Promote a leadership style based on accountability, respect, and consistency Standards; Assets & Sustainability Uphold high standards of cleanliness, maintenance, and presentation Ensure responsible asset use and long-term value preservation Promote sustainable operational practices aligned with conservation principles Work Structure On-site lodge-based role Flexible rest structures supported (including rotational options) Sustainable working rhythms encouraged; continuous work without rest is not expected Availability outside normal cycles only for genuine operational or crisis situations Required Experience Proven experience as a General Manager with full operational accountability Background in one or more of the following: Commercial hunting lodges Safari or remote lodge environments Boutique or luxury hospitality with strong hands-on exposure Experience managing small teams across multiple operational disciplines Qualifications & Certifications Commercial Hunting qualification and certification essential Professional Hunter (PH) certification advantageous Hospitality; lodge management, or tourism qualifications preferred South African Citizen Experience in a similar environment Personal Attributes Hands-on; confident operational leader Calm; emotionally mature, and resilient under pressure Strong attention to detail, particularly in cleanliness and guest experience Service-driven mindset with commercial awareness Comfortable with full accountability and autonomous decision-making Approachable; professional, and decisive leadership style
