Responsibilities

  • Evaluate and underwrite personal lines insurance policies (homeowners, household contents, all-risk, motor, etc.).
  • Ensure policies comply with underwriting guidelines, risk appetite, and regulatory requirements.
  • Apply risk assessment techniques to determine appropriate coverage, terms, and premiums.
  • Handle policy endorsements, renewals, cancellations, and new business quotations efficiently.
  • Accurately capture and maintain policy details on the underwriting system.
  • Conduct policy audits and monitor adherence to underwriting guidelines.
  • Work closely with the claims department to assess risk exposure and loss trends.
  • Provide professional advice to brokers and clients regarding policy terms, exclusions, and endorsements.
  • Respond to underwriting queries promptly and professionally.
  • Ensure compliance with FAIS, FICA, POPIA, and TCF (Treating Customers Fairly) principles.
  • Keep up to date with changes in short-term insurance legislation and underwriting best practices.
  • Identify potential fraud risks and report irregularities accordingly.
  • Build strong relationships with brokers, clients, and other stakeholders.
  • Provide technical underwriting support and training where necessary.
  • Participate in underwriting meetings and contribute to product development discussions.

Requirements

  • Matric (Grade 12) is essential.
  • A relevant short-term insurance qualification (e.g., Higher Certificate in Short-Term Insurance) is advantageous.
  • FAIS accreditation (RE5) is required.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years experience in domestic underwriting within the South African short-term insurance industry.
  • Strong knowledge of underwriting guidelines, policy wordings, and risk assessment principles.
  • Experience working with Lloyds of London insurance products is an advantage.
  • Proficiency in underwriting software and insurance administration systems.
  • Strong analytical and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal).
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • High attention to detail and accuracy in policy processing.
