In South Africa, the Agriculture, Fisheries, and Aquaculture (AFA) sector is a significant contributor to the country’s economy, employing numerous individuals across various roles. Generally, job seekers in this field can expect to find opportunities in industries such as agriculture, fishing, aquaculture, and related sectors.

Typically, salaries for AFA professionals in South Africa vary widely depending on factors like experience, company size, industry sector, and specific role within the organisation. While broad ranges are difficult to provide due to these variations, a general indication is that entry-level positions can expect salaries ranging from around R200 000 to R300 000 per annum, with more senior roles potentially exceeding R600 000 or even R800 000.

Common skills required for AFA professionals include strong knowledge of agricultural practices, fisheries management, and aquaculture techniques. Additionally, many roles require excellent communication and problem-solving skills, as well as experience working in a fast-paced environment. Agriculture, Fisheries, and Aquaculture professionals can find employment in various industries, including agricultural commodity production (e.g., grains, livestock), fishing and seafood processing, aquaculture (fish farming, etc.), and related sectors such as food processing, water management, or environmental services. The technology industry is also increasingly incorporating AFA expertise, particularly in areas like precision agriculture and sustainable fisheries management.
