Job Description

CORE PURPOSE OF JOB

This position requires a strategic, transformative, transformational and visionary leader who embraces the vision, mission, and values of Nelson Mandela University, who will ensure that the faculty’s goals align to Vision 2030.The Executive Dean is also expected to participate in, and contribute to university-wide decision-making processes.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

Strategically lead and manage the Faculty of Health Sciences through:

  • Transformative and Transformational academic leadership, including coordinating the development of the faculty’s strategic plan
  • Developing and implementing strategies to enhance student access and success
  • Adopting a human-centred approach to learning and teaching, including a focus on technology-enhanced learning, inter-professional health education, and work-integrated learning (WIL) on the broad clinical training platforms.
  • Research and innovation in accordance with the university’s research niche areas and fostering disciplinary and trans-disciplinary scholarship
  • Effective management of Human Resources
  • Financial and physical resources stewardship, including the mobilisation of external funding
  • Internal and external engagement locally, provincially, nationally, and internationally
  • Oversee the design, development and review of programmes, as  well as the process of external programme reviews
  • Ensure the marketing and branding of programmes.

CORE COMPETENCIES

 
  • Sound understanding of inter-professional Health Sciences education in the Higher Education and the Health sector
  • Sound knowledge of South African Higher Education and the operation of the National and Provincial Departments of Health
  • Sound knowledge of Higher Education internationalisation and its application in this field
  • Proven knowledge and experience in exercising stewardship in resource mobilisation
  • Strong ethical and transformational leadership skills
  • Dynamic people leadership and management skills
  • Sound knowledge of academic and financial management within a faculty
  • Strong drive for growth, development and innovation within the Faculty and University
 

REQUIREMENTS

 
  • Senior noteworthy scholar with a stellar academic record and with a PhD (doctoral degree), or a Master’s degree under exceptional circumstances (including Medical Specialists and Subspecialists)in a health-related discipline
  •  Registration as a health professional with a statutory health professions council. A minimum of 8-10 years of senior academic leadership experience, including at least three years of senior management experience
  • Proven scholarly abilities and achievements
  • Proven experience in managing and leading academic teaching, research, and engagement
  •  Proven experience in effectively managing and leading change and transformation
  • Sound budgeting and financial management expertise, including a demonstrable track record in fundraising and donor engagement
  •  Proven networking and stewardship skills

All shortlisted candidates will be required to undergo psychometric assessments. Furthermore, it is expected that all short-listed candidates will:

  • Permit to undergo verifications of qualifications, publications, credit records, and criminal records as well as any other verification deemed appropriate by the University;
  • Deliver a 15-minute presentation, the topic of which will be communicated timeously; and,
  • Provide details of at least three individuals who can provide professional references.
