Johannesburg: Senior Data Center Mechanical Engineer (HVAC Systems)

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Senior Data Center Mechanical Engineer to join our team in Johannesburg. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in designing, implementing, and managing HVAC systems for large-scale data centers and capital improvement projects. This role requires excellent technical skills, leadership abilities, and strong communication skills to work effectively with project management teams, subcontractors, and customers.

Key Responsibilities

• Deliver and review high-level designs (HLD), low-level designs (LLD), and shop drawings of Data Center and CI Solutions.
• Produce and manage the Bill of Quantities (BoQ) and all other documentation required for high-level project costs.
• Understand and clarify the LLD, BoQ, and responsibility matrix with subcontractors.
• Outline the responsibility matrix, execute heat load calculations, pressure drop calculations, specify main equipment needed, and approve final design briefs.
• Provide support for project management, including sub-contractor selection & management, supply chain, procurement, process management, and acceptance.
• Oversee and supervise 3rd-party consultants and contractors during on-site mechanical implementation while managing customer relationships.
• Implement and enforce the Mechanical Work SOP (Standard of Procedure) on-site to ensure quality installations by subcontractors.

Requirements

• 5 years of experience in Mechanical Engineering in Data Center and/or Capital Improvement Projects (Mission-Critical & industrial projects).
• 2 Large-Scale Data Center / CI Projects Delivered (no less than 1 megawatts).
• Solid experience with HVAC Systems (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Systems, Such as Chilled Water Systems, DX Systems, AHU Systems).
• Fire Systems Integration (Fire suppression, Automatic fire alarms, Fire water systems, Fire foam systems) and Plumbing and Drainage systems integration.
• Knowledge of Industry Standards (Institute, TIA 942) and Technology Vendors that relate to Data Center facilities.
• Solid knowledge of Mechanical Modelling Software (Revit, AutoCAD, etc.).
• Solid knowledge of various Codes, Regulations, and Standards across South Africa.

Qualifications

• A Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
• Professional registration preferred.
• IT / ICT or any business-related qualification will be an advantage.
