Job Description

About the Role

Network Contracting is seeking a skilled Mechanical Fitter to join our team in Johannesburg, South Africa. As a key member of our railway industry team, you will be responsible for performing mechanical maintenance, inspections, and repairs on locomotives, wagons, coaches, and rail equipment. With 3-5 years of experience as a Mechanical Fitter in the railway or heavy engineering industry, you will have the opportunity to work independently and under pressure, while contributing to the efficient turnaround times of our projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform mechanical maintenance, inspections, and repairs on locomotives, wagons, coaches, and rail equipment
  • Assemble, dismantle, align, and fit mechanical components such as bearings, gearboxes, brakes, couplings, and suspension systems
  • Conduct fault-finding and troubleshooting on mechanical systems
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, technical manuals, and specifications
  • Ensure all work is carried out in accordance with railway safety regulations, procedures, and quality standards
  • Complete job cards, maintenance reports, and inspection documentation accurately
  • Work closely with engineers, supervisors, and other artisans to ensure efficient turnaround times
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in a safe and clean condition
  • Participate in shutdowns, breakdowns, and standby duties as required

Requirements

  • Trade Test Certificate: Mechanical Fitter (Red Seal preferred)
  • Minimum of 3–5 years’ experience as a Mechanical Fitter, preferably in the railway or heavy engineering industry
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical systems used in rail rolling stock
  • Ability to work independently and under pressure
  • Good understanding of occupational health and safety standards
  • Willingness to work shifts, overtime, and in outdoor or depot environments
