Duties and Responsibilities

Planning.
? Year Plans and Term Plans of all grades in the phase to be checked and controlled.
? Regular monitoring of the progress against such plans and programs.
? Lead weekly planning sessions per grade.
? Arrange and chair Subject Meetings with the aim of establishing a clear direction and policy including discussion of teaching methods and strategies.
? Actual checking of books and teacher files, according to principals management plan.

Assessment.
? Formal assessments need to be moderated timeously with particular attention to the use of various levels of thinking (Blooms/Barretts Taxonomy). Memoranda to be provided.
? Internal Moderation Tools to be used effectively to monitor progress.
? To actively monitor and follow-up on learner attendance, progress, and performance.
? Ensuring that regular informal assessments are done in order to monitor each classs progress.
– Participate in Performance Reviews of teachers within the Department.

Curriculum Activities.
? Accountable for the development and delivery of the Departments curriculum per grade.
? To keep up to date with the developments and changes within the CAPS

Curriculum
? Lead initiatives within the Department to evaluate and improve knowledge of the subject content and teaching strategies.
? Ensure that different classes in the same grade work at the same pace and maintain uniform standards.
? Reports on the performance of the teachers and grades should be submitted to the Principal of the Primary School as r required.
? The HOD should be the intermediary between the grade teachers and the Principal of the Primary School.
? Attend and get feedback from all SAT and SBST meetings.
? Ensure that a teacher is present in class at all times. Make appropriate
arrangements for classes when designated teachers are absent.
? Select appropriate and best Textbooks and Resource Material for subjects.
? Share the responsibility for organising and conducting extra-curriculum and curriculum activities.

Training and Development.
? Provide professional training including study groups, peer coaching, network, peer days.
? Monitoring and supporting teachers that experience academic or disciplinary challenges.

Assuring Academic Quality.
? Set and achieve high academic performance standards and targets for the grades as prescribed.
– Implement effective intervention measures if Academic Performance Standards are not met in order to rectify under achievement. Implement Extra Classes in order to ensure academic performance targets are met.
? Ensure required academic results are achieved by the Foundation Phase.
? Ensure excellent learning and teaching at classroom level.
? Ensure that the written curriculum is in place regarding every subject in the Department serving as the fundamental input to the education product deliverable.
? Instil a disciplined culture of learning.

Administrative requirements
? Administrative support to the principal.
? Competence in Excel, Word, Power Point, d6, Outlook, WhatsApp, Facebook
? Devising and maintaining of office systems including data management and filing systems.
? Maintain and creating of electronic records.
