Job Summary

Location : Somerset West-Western Cape TITLE : Greenhouse Team Leader REPORTS TO : Myco Production Team Leader 1. PURPOSE 1.1 To assist the Myco Production Team Leader in the cultivation and processing of Mycorrhizae and to oversee and co-ordinate Greenhouses and Washing Plant operations 2. DIMENSIONS 2.1 Husbandry of greenhouse crops 2.2 Monitor the performance of the production activities with regards to productivity of people, efficiency of plant and quality of product 2.3 Maintain a high level of safety, health and environmental standards for the activities under the incumbents responsibilities 3. PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES 3.1 GREENHOUSES : 3.1.1 Participate in the planning and executing of production activities in co-operation with the Myco Production Team Leader. This includes, but is not limited to:- 3.1.11 Harvesting of crates 3.1.12 Sowing of crates 3.1.13 Soft rejuvenation / reseeding of crates 3.1.14 Crop protection spray 3.1.15 Crop nutrition spray 3.1.16 Rodent / pest control 3.1.17 Weed control 3.1.18 Transport of crates with tractor and trailer 3.1.19 Hard rejuvenation of a complete overhaul of crates where all media is replaced with virgin media and new inoculum is added 3.1.2 Monitor climatic environment inside greenhouses and control as far as possible by opening and closing of windows and doors 3.1.3 Oversee the Greenhouse Plant Attendant to ensure that: 3.1.31 The irrigation in all tunnels is regularly monitored to ensure even watering of plants 3.1.32 Blocked nozzles are cleaned 3.1.33 Dry spots are hand watered 3.1.4 Assume responsibility for operating the new drive unit and conveyer system to move crates in the new tunnels, whilst ensuring that: 3.1.41 The crate transportation device is installed correctly and secured at all times 3.1.42 The drive unit is installed and operating correctly 3.1.43 The conveyor belt is set and operating at the correct tension 3.1.44 The crates are moving in the correct manner 3.1.45 Only trained and competent staff operate this equipment 3.1.46 Staff members are wearing the required PPE and maintain a high level of safety awareness at all times 3.1.5 Take weekly readings in all greenhouses of the following: 3.1.51 Substrate temperature 3.1.52 Ambient temperature 3.1.53 Relative humidity 3.1.6 Monitor and record heat stress levels in greenhouses during periods of high temperature inside greenhouses and control staff working in these conditions (heat exposure) 3.1.7 Maintain a database of all historical and new data 3.1.8 Assist the Myco Production Team Leader as and when instructed with the following: 3.1.81 Taking moisture readings of all tunnels 3.1.82 Keeping records of Irrigation Schedules 3.1.83 Implementing the Fertigation program 3.2 MYCORRHIZAE PLANT AND PROCESS 3.2.1 To monitor the performance of the production activities with regard to productivity of people, efficiency of plant, capacities of plant and quality of product 3.2.2 Depending on daily demand, process 74 to 148 crates per day 3.2.3 Ensure that production targets are met timeously 3.2.4 Assist with the implementation of standard operating procedures for all production activities 3.2.5 Ensure standard operating procedures for all production activities are maintained at all times, especially during peak season or periods of high production demands 3.2.6 Ensure plant is operated according to predetermined specifications 3.2.7 Work within the framework of general policies and objectives 3.2.8 Evaluate problems in the plant and process and formulate corrective action including full incident report 3.2.9 Safeguard against low levels of production losses, both normal and abnormal 3.2.10 Observe, monitor and communicate possible production bottlenecks to the relevant Departments 3.2.11 Continuously monitor and improve production processes and packing lines in order to optimise effectiveness and efficiency 3.2.12 Institute corrective action immediately in conjunction with the line manager and relevant Departments 3.2.13 Responsible for conducting PJOs (Planned Job Observations) on all WIs and PSOPs on the areas under the incumbents control 3.2.14 Ensure that workforce is utilised effectively when production demands fluctuate 3.2.15 Ensure that subordinates are suitably trained, including temporary labour under the incumbents supervision 3.2.16 Keep attendance records of all subordinates, including temporary labour 3.2.17 Ensure that cross contamination of products is avoided 3.2.18 Assist Management with problem solving tasks 3.2.19 Evaluate, in conjunction with the Production Planning Team the need to work overtime; and set targets and monitor plant performance when required to do so 3.2.20 Assist the Myco Production Team Leader as and when instructed with the following: 3.2.201 Adaptation of the Harvesting Schedule in response to changing circumstances 3.2.202 The recall of issued Myco powder batch labels 3.2.203 Printing and issuing new Myco Powder batch labels according to the adapted Harvesting Schedule 3.3 STOCK CONTROL 3.3.1 Raw Materials at production plant 3.3.11 Receive new stock arriving on site and check against Purchase Order (PO) 3.3.12 Ensure the proper storage of raw materials 3.3.13 Ensure raw materials are used in accordance with a FIFO (first in, first out) system 3.3.14 Carry out stock takes on weekly bases or as instructed by the Myco Production Team leader 3.3.2 Mycorrhizae powder stock 3.3.21 Ensure the traceability system is maintained by the plant operator 3.3.22 Ensure the correct storage of produced mycorrhizae powder 3.3.23 Ensure the correct procedure is followed for the signing out of mycorrhizae powder is followed. 3.3.24 Enforce strict protocols are maintained in the release of Myco powder to the Processing Department to ensure that the traceability system is adhered to 3.3.25 Monitor stock levels and report foreseeable low stock levels to Management 3.3.26 Monitor stock usage to ensure the relative FIFO system is maintained 3.3.27 Carry out stock takes on a monthly basis 3.3.3 By-products 3.3.31 Ensure the correct processing of by-products from washing plant (washed media, settlement trays powder, etc.) 3.3.32 Ensure the correct storage protocols are adhered to in respect of all by- products 3.3.33 Ensure the correct utilisation of by-products and traceability systems are maintained 3.3.34 Ensure appropriate waste removal of excess by-product by means of tractor and trailer as and when required 3.4 MAINTENANCE 3.4.1 Assume responsibility for the maintenance of all tunnels, conveyer systems and Production Plants in terms of the following: – 3.4.11 Ensuring that all equipment utilised is kept to a high level of efficiency 3.4.12 Monitoring maintenance scheduling 3.4.13 Ensuring that the Plant Operators actively take part in plant upkeep and maintenance 3.4.14 Ensuring maintenance is efficiently managed 3.5 SAFETY, HEALTH, ENVIRONMENT AND QUALITY (SHEQ) 3.5.1 Required to conform to relevant SHEQ rules and regulations as per company policy 3.5.2 To ensure adherence to the high level of safety standards 3.5.3 To meet occupational health requirements at the site as well as in areas of responsibility 3.5.4 Be aware and alert to the toxic, flammable and hazardous nature of materials handled in relevant work areas (where applicable) 3.5.5 Ensure accurate and honest reporting of incidents, near misses and safety hazards 3.5.6 Promote the reporting of Process Safety Incidents 3.5.7 Be aware of and respect safety of other tenants on site (if applicable) and the local community 3.5.8 Manage and ensure that employees are aware of and are well trained to react to emergency situations that may arise on the Somerset West site as a whole 3.6 SHEQ MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS (I.E. ISO, ETC) 3.6.1 To participate and assist to maintain SHEQ Management Systems certification/standards 3.6.2 To ensure that non-conformance issues are reported according to the non-conformance procedures 3.6.3 To ensure that actions emanating from non-conformance investigations are closed out timeously 3.6.4 To ensure that SHEQ Management Systems requirements related to areas of responsibility are strictly adhered to 3.6.5 Participate in all internal and external audits done for SHEQ Management Systems pertaining to areas of responsibility 3.6.6 Ensure that all documentation related to this function is compiled and kept up to date for the above certifications (where applicable) 3.7 SUPERVISION OF STAFF (STAFF EDUCATION AND DEVELOPMENT) 3.7.1 To manage the staff complement under the incumbents control as per the organogram with regard to, but not limited to the following: – 3.7.2 TIME MANAGEMENT: Specifically presence at work actively fulfilling designated duties 3.7.3 EFFICIENCY MANAGEMENT: Motivating, training, optimising in order to meet targets 3.7.4 PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT: Conducting routine appraisals and counselling on areas of concern, utilising disciplinary systems in a fair and consistent manner 3.7.5 Appropriate labour utilisation and scheduling optimisation 3.7.6 Maintain a sound level of industrial relations with personnel as per the Company Human Resource Code of Practise 3.7.7 Training of temporary personnel (where applicable) 3.7.8 Implement and respond to the training needs in line with the overall Company policy 3.7.9 Empowering subordinates to act 3.8 HOUSEKEEPING 3.8.1 Assume responsibility for the Housekeeping of all tunnels and Production Plants in terms of the following: – 3.8.11 Ensuring effective housekeeping is maintained with all processes and in and around all greenhouses and plants 3.9 AD HOC TASKS 3.9.1 On occasion carry out miscellaneous legal ad hoc tasks for which the incumbent is competent as instructed by Management 3.9.2 Assist the Myco Production Team Leader with the execution and long term supervision of trials in greenhouses 3.9.3 Assist the Research and Development and Quality Control Departments in the sampling and harvesting of trials 3.9.4 Adhere to all internal controls as laid down by the company 3.9.5 Assist or stand-in in for absent colleagues as and when requested by the Myco Production Team Leader 3.9.6 Assist or provide input with project work associated with the incumbents areas of responsibility 3.9.7 Maintain a sound working knowledge of all plants and processes in the incumbents area of responsibility and adopt a “hands on” approach 3.9.8 Shut down the plant and processes in a safe manner 3.9.9 Appropriately and timeously respond to hazardous conditions and emergencies 4. KNOWLEDGE 4.1 EDUCATION : 4.1.1 Minimum education Grade 12 or recognition of prior learning (ND or Degree) 4.1.2 Knowledge of the safe handling of Agri-chemicals advantageous 4.2 KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS 4.2.1 Must possess a sound working knowledge and understanding of plants and crops in terms of seed germination, growth and general plant husbandry 4.2.2 Knowledge of SHEQ Management System requirements would be advantageous but is not a prerequisite 4.2.3 Must be computer literate MS Office (Word/Excel/Outlook) 4.2.4 Must possess knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act 4.2.5 Sound knowledge and experience of GLOBAL G.A.P or similar recognized certification would be advantageous 5. EXPERIENCE 5.1 Minimum of 5 years related experience in the same or a similar environment is required 6.
