Job Description
Purpose of the Role
The Technical Assistant / Junior Engineer provides both technical and administrative support to the General Manager and engineering teams. The role ensures efficient coordination of engineering projects, supports production processes, and assists in the design, development, and optimization of technical processes.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Support
- Assist engineers and maintenance teams with process and technical research, design, and development.
- Gather and analyze data to support production processes and engineering projects.
- Ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations.
- Identify and resolve technical and process-related issues.
- Contribute to the development of new products, systems, or technologies.
- Conduct tests and experiments to validate process designs or modifications.
Process Improvement
- Identify areas for improvement in engineering processes and propose solutions.
- Support the implementation of new systems or software to enhance productivity.
- Maintain detailed records of work processes, changes, and outcomes.
Administrative Support
- Coordinate schedules for the General Manager, including meetings, appointments, and travel.
- Draft and manage communications such as emails and letters on behalf of management.
- Prepare meeting agendas, presentations, and supporting materials.
- Attend meetings, record minutes, and follow up on action items.
- Organize and maintain digital and physical engineering records, including project files, reports, blueprints, and specifications.
Project Coordination
- Monitor project progress and track tasks to keep projects on schedule.
- Assist in coordinating resources such as equipment, tools, and materials.
- Serve as a liaison between engineering, maintenance teams, other departments, and external stakeholders.
Inventory & Resource Management
- Monitor and manage inventory of technical supplies and equipment.
- Procure necessary materials and tools as required for projects.
Health, Safety & Quality
- Ensure compliance with health, safety, and housekeeping standards.
- Report hazards, incidents, and near misses.
- Apply quality standards and maintain Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).
- Comply with site-specific Food Safety Management System (FSMS) requirements.
Self-Development & Growth
- Assess personal strengths and development areas and take actions to improve.
- Stay up-to-date with innovations and technical improvements relevant to the role.
- Promote teamwork, self-management, and high-quality performance.
General Responsibilities
- Ensure colleagues can access information in absence of management.
- Serve as a role model by applying company principles, standards, and best practices.
- Undertake additional tasks as required to meet operational needs.
Qualifications & Experience
- Education: Matric (Grade 12) and Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related technical field.
- Experience: 2–5 years’ relevant experience in manufacturing or engineering support.
Competencies
- Understanding of technical drawings, fault finding, and equipment testing.
- Knowledge of manufacturing processes, equipment, raw materials, moulds, and downstream operations.
- Strong problem-solving, administrative, and project management skills.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency with relevant software.
- Ability to act decisively and maintain attention to detail.
- Commitment to health, safety, and environmental standards.
- Passion for a career in packaging with environmental awareness.
