A dynamic and fast-growing South African company, located in the East Rand of Johannesburg and renowned for its expertise in precious metals refining, is seeking an experienced Laboratory Manager. Reporting to the Refinery Manager, the successful candidate will lead and develop the QA/QC function of the Refinery and Laboratory, ensuring compliance with ISO standards and achieving LBMA accreditation – a must for this role. A Masters degree (MSc) or PhD in Chemistry, Metallurgy, or a related field is highly advantageous, as is a proven track record of managing and commercializing a laboratory, ideally within the precious metals industry. This role requires a seasoned leader with strong technical knowledge, a passion for developing people, and the drive to contribute to the company’s financial success.

Requirements:

• Bachelors degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering.
• A Masters degree (MSc) or PhD in Chemistry, Metallurgy, or a related field is highly advantageous, enabling the successful candidate to represent the company at industry conferences and events.
• Extensive knowledge of ISO standards and LBMA certification requirements is essential for this role.
• Minimum of 5 + years experience managing a laboratory.
• Proven track record of commercializing a laboratory to contribute to the financial success of the Company.
• Comfortable with LIMS implementation and maintenance
• Proven ability to implement and manage a 5S Quality System to drive quality at source.
• Manage and oversee CAPEX and OPEX budgeting and expenditure.
• Valid License & Own transport
• A clear criminal record is required, and the successful candidate must be willing to undergo a polygraph examination.

Duties:

• Develop an organizational plan to commercialize the laboratory
• Implement relevant and required software system(s)
• Ensure the overall safety of the laboratory
• Manage the daily operations of the laboratory
• Achieve and maintain all required laboratory certifications or accreditations
• Write and update laboratory procedures
• Oversee scheduling and training of laboratory technicians, including contractors
• Control inventory and manage purchasing of laboratory supplies
• Maintain and calibrate laboratory equipment
• Ensure products meet quality specifications
• Develop and meet limits of the annual budget
• Ensure the safe and efficient operation of the laboratory while complying with all environmental health and safety standards
• Oversee hourly paid laboratory technicians and manage contractors as needed
• Perform other duties as required by the business, even if not specifically listed in the job description.
