Job Summary
- Studying toward, or recently completed, a degree/diploma in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or related field.
- Basic programming ability in at least one language (e.g., Python, Node.js/JavaScript, Java, or .NET).
- Understanding of HTTP, RESTful APIs, and JSON.
- Familiarity with relational or NoSQL databases at a basic level.
- Version control basics (Git) and comfort using a modern IDE.
- Able to work in a team, take feedback, and communicate clearly.
- Eligible to work in South Africa and available to be on-site in Johannesburg as required.
COMPETENCIES/SKILLS REQUIRED:
- Programming Foundations: Write simple, clean code; read and understand existing code; follow coding standards.
- APIs & Services: Build and consume basic REST endpoints; handle input validation; awareness of OpenAPI/Swagger.
- Data & Storage: Fundamentals of SQL (tables, queries) and awareness of NoSQL concepts; basic data modelling.
- AI Integration (awareness): Call model APIs/SDKs under guidance; handle prompts/responses and simple logging.
- Architecture (awareness): Request/response flows, microservices basics, and simple message/queue concepts.
- Security (awareness): Secure coding habits; basics of auth (OAuth2/JWT) and handling secrets.
- Testing & Quality: Awareness of unit testing; debugging fundamentals; basic performance and reliability concepts.
- DevOps & Cloud (awareness): Containers (Docker basics), CI/CD concepts, exposure to Azure/AWS tooling.
- Collaboration: Participate in code reviews, write concise documentation/READMEs, follow team processes and design standards.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Implement small backend features under mentorship (simple CRUD endpoints, input validation, error handling).
- Assist with AI integration tasks (wire up model/API calls, process responses, capture logs/metrics).
- Support data work (create/update schemas, write basic queries) and connect services to data stores.
- Contribute to API documentation (e.g., OpenAPI) and keep repos tidy (README, scripts).
- Write simple tests, help troubleshoot bugs, and assist with CI/CD pipelines and environment setup.
- Participate in stand-ups, reviews, and demos; follow coding standards, security practices, and platform conventions.
- Help with basic monitoring/observability tasks (log checks, simple dashboards) and incremental performance improvements.
