South Africa: Mechanical Fitter

Qualifications: Minimum Education: N3 N6 in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent. Trade Test: Qualified Mechanical Fitter (Red Seal). Experience: 35 years post-apprenticeship experience in a manufacturing, processing, or industrial environment. Additional Skills: Experience with hydraulics and pneumatics. Knowledge of pumps, motors, gearboxes, and rotating equipment. Basic welding and fabrication skills (advantageous). Key Responsibilities: Assemble and fit mechanical components and systems according to technical drawings and specifications. Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on machinery and equipment (e.g., pumps, conveyors, gearboxes, compressors, valves, etc.). Diagnose mechanical faults and carry out necessary repairs or replacements. Inspect, test, and align equipment to ensure proper operation. Work with precision tools and measuring instruments (e.g., micrometers, verniers). Assist in equipment installations and commissioning of new machinery. Ensure all work complies with health, safety, and environmental standards. Maintain accurate maintenance records and report breakdowns or potential failures. Collaborate with electricians, welders, and other maintenance personnel as required. Identify opportunities for mechanical improvements and cost savings. Min 3 years post-trade test experience within a manufacturing environment. Good mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic fault-finding skills. Ability to prepare and read mechanical schematics. Ability to carry out basic welding, machining, and drilling. Working knowledge of lifting equipment, e.g, chain blocks, hydraulic jacks. Fully conversant with Environmental, Health, and Safety Standards Responsible for Technical Assets. Computer literate with knowledge of MS Office and maintenance software (SAP preferably).
