Industrial Automation Engineering Turn-key Mechanical Design Engineer having designed Bespoke Special Purpose Machinery Permanent position| The company is in Johannesburg near Roodepoort Working at Companies premises – must be willing to relocate near to the client’s Company if needed Permanent position Must have a BEng / BSc / BTech in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent. Professional registration (or working towards) would be a great advantage * Must have Strong working experience in 3D CAD (SolidWorks, Or Inventor, Or Creo, Or similar.) * The Mechanical Design Engineer must have working experience from 3 to 8 years in doing concept designs bespoke machinery, automated systems will be responsible detailed mechanical designs, and engineering support systems. with Automation or Industrial Robotic Systems OR Material Handling Or Fabrication Experience drawings BOMs. Must have had Basic familiarity with PDM/PLM systems Must have gained experience Translate customer URS and internal specifications into engineering solutions. , Or Packaging machinery. Assembly/test systems, Production equipment Select specify standard components bearings, gearboxes, pneumatics, motors, actuators, sensors, guarding, Mechanism and machine design etc. * Must have experience in Pneumatics basic hydraulics, Drives, motors, gearboxes, bearings. Structural and frame designing Tolerance analysis GD&T Practical manufacturing knowledge machining, fabrication, assembly Design for safety and compliance Proven track record designing special-purpose machines, not mass-produced products Exposure to FMEA, risk assessments, CE marking or machinery compliance systems advantage Support risk assessments, FMEA, and design reviews. Must have Created full manufacturing packs including drawings, BOMs, and technical documentation. Strong engineering problem-solver Comfortable working in project-based, deadline-driven environments Able to communicate effectively with customers, suppliers, and internal teams Hands-on mindset — willing to go into the workshop and onto site Well organised, documentation-driven High level of accountability and ownership Liaise with the workshop/fabrication teams to ensure designs are practical and manufacturable. Work closely with procurement to support vendor selection and technical evaluations. Design for safety, maintainability, reliability, and cost efficiency. The role focuses on transforming customer requirements into robust, manufacturable, and cost-effective machine designs, supporting projects from concept through to commissioning. This position is suited to an engineer who thrives in custom machine environments, enjoys hands-on problem solving, and can work closely with electrical, controls, and manufacturing teams. Collaborate with electrical and control engineers to ensure fully integrated machine solutions. Support the build, assembly, and debug phases. Provide technical support during commissioning and site installation. Resolve design issues, modifications, and continuous improvement actions. Liaise with the workshop/fabrication teams to ensure designs are practical and manufacturable. Support prototype builds and first-off inspections. Assist with troubleshooting mechanical faults during assembly and testing. Maintain accurate engineering documentation, revision control, and standards compliance. Ensure machines meet relevant safety and regulatory standards (e.g., CE, ISO, machinery directives where applicable). Contribute to technical files, operating manuals, and handover packs.
