About the Role

Hire Resolve’s client is seeking an experienced Underwriter to join their team in Johannesburg, Gauteng. The ideal candidate will have Multi-Line experience and a strong understanding of underwriting principles. As an Underwriter, you will play a crucial role in managing complex risks and developing strategic partnerships within the Africa region.

Key Responsibilities

  • Champion partnerships and relationships in Africa.
  • Coordinate complex risks with product experts.
  • Follow underwriting mandates and company guidelines for profitability.
  • Approve risk selection within product line boundaries.
  • Develop relationships with brokers to drive renewals and sales.
  • Re-underwrite renewals for organic growth and profitability.
  • Maintain effective broker relationships to attract and retain business.
  • Ensure compliance with underwriting processes and administrative tasks.
  • Analyze data for risk selection and coverage approval.
  • Recommend improvements for productivity and profitability.
  • Decline unsuitable risks and document appropriately.
  • Ensure timely issuance of policy transactions.
  • Meet goals for new business within company guidelines.
  • Service and re-underwrite renewal policies as needed.
  • Provide timely and professional customer service.
  • Maintain knowledge of underwriting principles.
  • Participate in product development and process improvements.
  • Train underwriting assistants for career development.
  • Keep accurate records and ensure compliance with standards.
  • Perform other necessary operational duties.

Requirements

  • Specialist underwriting experience with at least five years in specific product lines.
  • Strong product knowledge and understanding of industry segmentation and applicable risk exposures.
  • Enquiring mind to gather additional information for effective risk assessment.
  • Proficiency in underwriting procedures, insurance terminology, and rating principles.
  • Advantageous experience in General Liability, Professional Indemnity, and Financial Lines.
  • Strong influencing and relationship management skills.
  • Ability to adapt to different country cultures.
  • Willingness to travel internationally.
  • Openness to developing new underwriting experience with new products.
  • Business management and self-management skills.
  • Good communication skills, including writing and presentation.
  • Strong negotiation skills (internal and external).
  • Sales and marketing experience.
  • Analytical skills for interpreting data related to assigned risks.
  • Solutions-driven approach.
  • Well-presented and representative of the company’s image.
  • Intermediate proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
