Job Description
Location: Cape Town, South Africa
Job Purpose:
The Tax Compliance Officer will be responsible for ensuring the organisation’s compliance with tax laws and regulations. The individual will work closely with the finance team and other departments to maintain accurate and up-to-date tax records, prepare tax returns, and provide guidance on tax-related matters. The Tax Compliance Officer will also liaise with tax authorities and external auditors to resolve any tax-related issues.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Maintenance of Tax Records:
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of all tax-related transactions.
- Monitor changes in tax laws and regulations and ensure the organization’s compliance.
- Prepare and maintain proper documentation for tax audits.
2. Tax Returns Preparation:
- Prepare accurate and timely tax returns (including VAT, PAYE, and corporate taxes) in compliance with relevant laws and regulations.
- Coordinate with the finance team to gather required financial data for tax return preparation.
- Conduct regular reviews and reconciliations to ensure accuracy and compliance.
3. Compliance Monitoring:
- Develop and implement procedures to ensure ongoing compliance with tax laws and regulations.
- Review and assess the organization’s tax-related processes and systems to identify areas of noncompliance or improvement opportunities.
- Provide guidance and support to other departments on tax-related issues and policies.
4. Liaison with Tax Authorities:
- Serve as the primary contact person for tax-related inquiries and correspondence with tax authorities.
- Coordinate and respond to tax audits, enquiries, and assessments.
- Identify and implement measures to resolve any tax-related disputes or issues.
5. Tax Planning and Optimization:
- Stay up-to-date with changes in tax laws and regulations to identify opportunities for tax planning and optimisation.
- Provide advice and recommendations on tax planning strategies to optimize the organization’s tax position while maintaining compliance.
- Work closely with the finance team and other relevant stakeholders to implement tax planning initiatives.
Requirements:
- A bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field.
- Proven experience as a Tax Compliance Officer or similar role.
- In-depth knowledge of South African tax laws and regulations.
- Proficient in tax return preparation and familiar with tax software.
- Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to interpret and explain complex tax regulations to non-tax professionals.
- Ability to work independently and effectively prioritise tasks.
- Professional certifications preferred
