Location: Bellville Role: Health and Safety Consultant Summary: Conducts health and safety audits to assess compliance with regulations and standards. Provides expert advice, identifies risks, recommends improvements, and supports clients in creating safer workplace practices. Key Responsibilities: Client Consultation & Advisory Services: Provide expert health and safety consultation to multiple external clients across various industries Act as the appointed Health and Safety Advisor for clients (legal appointments in terms of OHSA) Conduct initial client assessments and develop customized H&S strategies Advise clients on legislative compliance requirements and best practices Develop client-specific health and safety policies, procedures, and programs Attend client sites regularly for routine visits and support Auditing & Compliance: Conduct comprehensive health and safety compliance audits at client facilities Perform ISO 45001 system audits and gap analyses Evaluate compliance with OHSA Act 85 of 1993 and all applicable regulations Conduct legal compliance audits and identify non-conformances Prepare detailed audit reports with findings, recommendations, and action plans Verify implementation of corrective actions during follow-up visits Liaise with Department of Employment and Labour inspectors on behalf of clients Risk Management Services: Conduct risk assessments (HIRA) and Job Safety Analyses for client operations Develop risk registers and risk mitigation strategies Review and update clients’ Safe Work Procedures and Standard Operating Procedures Assess hazardous operations and recommend appropriate control measures Conduct workplace inspections and identify unsafe conditions Documentation & Systems Development: Develop comprehensive Safety Files for client organizations Create and maintain legal appointment registers Develop Emergency Response Plans and evacuation procedures Prepare mandatory documentation for Department of Employment and Labour submissions Assist clients with Compensation Fund registrations and submissions Develop PPE matrices and hazardous chemical registers Training & Capacity Building: Develop and deliver customized health and safety training programs for clients Conduct on-site induction training for client employees and contractors Facilitate Health and Safety Committee meetings and representative training Deliver toolbox talks and safety awareness sessions Train client personnel on incident investigation procedures Incident Management Support: Assist clients with incident, accident, and near-miss investigations Conduct root cause analysis and prepare investigation reports Advise on corrective and preventive actions Support clients with Compensation Fund claims and submissions Guide clients through Department of Employment and Labour incident reporting Client Relationship Management: Maintain strong professional relationships with existing clients Provide responsive support and timely service delivery Conduct quarterly business reviews with key clients Identify opportunities for additional services and client retention Support business development and new client acquisition Required Qualifications: Education: Essential: National Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Health, or related field SAMTRAC (Safety Management Training Certificate) – mandatory Valid First Aid Level 2 or 3 Certificate Certificate in Incident Investigation Advantegeous: NEBOSCH IGC (International General Certificate) ISO 45001 Lead Auditor certification Construction Health and Safety Management Course Diploma in Occupational Health (DOH) Professional qualification (e.g., Pr.CPM, COH) Registration & Licensing: Essential: Registration with SACPCMP (as a Professional Health and Safety Consultant) or SAIOH – mandatory Valid Code 08 (EB) driver’s license with own reliable vehicle Experience: Minimum 5 years’ proven experience in health and safety consulting or advisory role Extensive experience conducting health and safety audits across multiple industries Demonstrated track record managing multiple client accounts simultaneously Experience with legal compliance audits and Department of Employment and Labour interactions Proven experience in developing H&S management systems from scratch Experience in construction, manufacturing, retail, or logistics industries highly advantageous Industry Knowledge: Must have multi-industry exposure including: Construction (OHS Act Regulations for Construction Work) Manufacturing and industrial operations General commercial/office environments Warehousing and logistics (optional but advantageous) Knowledge & Skills: Expert knowledge of South African occupational health and safety legislation (OHSA and all regulations) Thorough understanding of ISO 45001:2018 standard and implementation Proficiency in various risk assessment methodologies Knowledge of Construction Regulations 2014 Understanding of Environmental Regulations and waste management Knowledge of Compensation Fund processes and procedures Familiarity with Labour Relations Act and Employment Equity Act Technical Competencies: Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) Excellent report writing and presentation skills Ability to interpret technical drawings and site plans Experience with H&S management software and audit tools Strong analytical and non-conformances Working Conditions: Office-based in Bellville with frequent travel to client sites Approximately 60-70% of time spent at various client locations across Western Cape Occasional work
