Cape Town: QC/QA Department Manager – Ship Maintenance posted by Rory Mackie & Associates
Job Description
Our client is a shipyard in Cape Town. They provide maintenance and repair services for all vessel types.
Responsibilities:
- Developing and Implementing Quality Control Processes:
- Creating and maintaining quality control procedures, standards, and protocols for all aspects of shipyard operations.
- Conducting Audits and Inspections:
- Performing regular audits and inspections of shipyard processes, materials, and finished products to identify deviations from standards.
- Leading and Mentoring:
- Providing leadership and guidance to the quality control team, fostering a culture of quality and continuous improvement.
- Identifying and Resolving Quality Issues:
- Investigating quality problems, determining root causes, and implementing corrective and preventative actions.
- Ensuring Compliance:
- Ensuring compliance with relevant industry standards, regulatory requirements, and customer specifications.
- Documenting Quality Control Activities:
- Maintaining accurate records of quality control activities, including inspections, audits, and corrective actions.
- Collaborating with Stakeholders:
- Working with other departments, such as engineering, production, and procurement, to address quality-related issues and improve overall performance.
- Managing Supplier Quality:
- Evaluating and managing the quality of materials and services provided by external suppliers.
- Training and Development:
- Providing training to shipyard personnel on quality standards and procedures.
- Continuous Improvement:
- Identifying opportunities for process improvement and implementing measures to enhance quality and efficiency.
Requirements:
- Educational:
-
- Quality control experience
- Experience in marine /Shipbuilding industry
- Experience/Technical:
- Ship working experience of onboard systems is a plus (electrical system, hydraulics, air conditioning, fuel supply, engine cooling).
- Understanding of industry specific standards and norms
- Understanding of industry welding procedures
- Dealing with 3rd party Classification societies for the duration of the newbuild and managing required records and documents.
- Excellent report writing skills
- Professional Experience:
- Minimum 10 years combined QA-QC experience covering marine, oil and gas EPC projects (onshore /offshore), heavy fabrication, process plants, etc.
- Minimum 5 years experience in QA-QC Manager role
- Proved auditing experience
- Computer Skills:

- Good knowledge of MS Office
- Market/Industry/Functional Knowledge:

- Proved capability in preparing and implementing quality assurance policies, procedures/plans/instructions
- Strong management practices and techniques
- Very good analytical and interpersonal skills
- Strong knowledge of safety and environmental practices related to the industry
- Good knowledge of marine, oil & gas industry standards/ codes/ regulations
