Gauteng: Registered Occupational Hygiene Specialist posted by Jobs 4 All
Job Description
The Registered Occupational Hygiene Specialist is a professionally registered and legally accountable role responsible for the identification, evaluation, control, and continuous monitoring of workplace health hazards. This role is central to ASP’s strategic intent to build internal occupational hygiene capacity, reduce reliance on outsourced consultants, and ensure compliance with national and international hygiene
standards.
The Specialist also holds the Radiation Protection Officer appointment, with responsibility for managing authority renewals, reporting compliance, and ensuring alignment with National Nuclear Regulator (NNR) requirements.
This role spans multiple high-risk environments, including multi-level buildings, confined spaces, and facilities handling flammable, toxic, corrosive, and radioactive substances.
The Specialist must be proficient in zoning protocols (Red, Blue, Green), sensor placement, and atmospheric hazard mitigation strategies, and must ensure alignment with ASP’s Site Master File (SMF), Radiation Protection Plan (RPP), and Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment Procedure (STD-001).
The Occupational Hygiene Specialist works in close collaboration with the Compliance Specialist to ensure that all hygiene-related activities meet both external regulatory requirements and internal compliance standards. This includes joint planning for inspections, audits, and reporting, as well as coordinated responses to non-conformances and regulatory inquiries.
The role is embedded within ASP’s HSREQ specialist framework and functions in close coordination with the Fire Safety Specialist, Integrated Management System Specialist, ESG Specialist, Safety Specialist, and Compliance Specialist. It also includes supervisory responsibility over HSE Officer 1 and HSE Officer 2, ensuring that hygiene-related inspections, sampling, and reporting are executed consistently and
accurately across all facilities.
Hygiene Survey Planning & Execution:
Develop and implement site-specific occupational hygiene survey plans tailored to the operational environments.
Conduct certified baseline, routine, and ad hoc exposure assessments for:
- Airborne contaminants (e.g., silane, germane, ammonia, chlorine, carbon monoxide).
- Noise exposure (e.g., compressors, laser operations, generator zones).
- Thermal stress (e.g., confined spaces, multi-level buildings).
- Illumination, ventilation, and ergonomic risks.
- Ensure surveys are aligned with ASP zoning protocols (Red, Blue, Green), sensor placement strategies, and atmospheric hazard mitigation plans.
- Collaborate with the Compliance Specialist to ensure survey methodologies and documentation meet regulatory and internal audit standards.
Regulatory Compliance & Reporting:
- Ensure full compliance with:
- OHSA and Hazardous Chemical Substances Regulations.
- Noise-Induced Hearing Loss Regulations.
- SANS 10083, SANS 10103, and ISO 17025 calibration standards.
- SAPHRA licensing conditions and NNR regulatory requirements.
- Submit certified hygiene reports to SAPHRA, Department of Labour, and the National Nuclear Regulator (NNR) as applicable.
- Maintain defensible records of exposure assessments, control measures, and medical surveillance triggers.
- Work closely with the Compliance Specialist to ensure reporting accuracy, legal defensibility, and alignment with ASP’s internal compliance framework.
