Job Description

CORE PURPOSE OF JOB The Department of Construction Management seeks to appoint a Professor of Construction Management to facilitate teaching and learning as well as research supervision of Honours, Masters, and Doctoral students. The main aim of this professorship is to maintain Nelson Mandela University as the leader in the discipline and profession of Construction Management on the African continent. As a dynamic African university, recognised for its leadership in generating cutting-edge knowledge for a sustainable future, this professorship aims to consolidate and enhance the department’s position as the pre-eminent location for management of the business of construction and projects theorisation. Alongside developing relationships between industry and academia to enhance the business of construction and projects, the position’s further aim is to provide scholarly leadership in Construction Management and supervision capacity for the MSc and PhD in Construction Management programmes. KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS Research & scholarship Contribute to knowledge production through the publication of scholarly outputs in reputable journals and peer-reviewed books, and presentations at local, national and international conferences. Supervise Honours and Masters students as well as Doctoral candidates. Conceptualise and develop research methodologies that heighten the business of construction theories. Engage local and regional intellectual communities towards systematic theorisation of construction management as a disciplinary space. Pursue external funding for research by developing and attracting project proposals that would contribute towards the sustainability of the built environment related research projects at Mandela University. Learning & Teaching Facilitate teaching and learning at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. Perform administration as well as other academic related functions Take responsibility for identified academic modules in the BSc and BSc (Honours) Construction Management programme. Undertake subject development. Advocacy & Engagement Support and develop a new generation of scholars within and beyond Social Sciences research. Engage across the University to embed better construction management practices in project delivery. Capacitate students, local communities, and practitioners in understanding the impact of construction industry policy with the intention of informing and contributing to its continuous improvement through civil, and Strengthen the health, safety and wellness project through collaborations with academic, civil, government and other stakeholders. CORE COMPETENCIES Technical / Professional knowledge and skills. Knowledge of curriculum development processes, combined with necessary theoretical and administrative skills for execution. Knowledge of the higher education funding landscape, and research proposal development experience. Excellent leadership and management capabilities. Excellent interpersonal skills, with expertise in networking and building collaborations. Ability to work with diverse stakeholders. Conflict resolution skills. Excellent communication skills and multilingual capacity (verbal and written). Research skills and depth of knowledge in the discipline of construction management, combined with the ability to undertake interdisciplinary, multi-disciplinary, and transdisciplinary research. Expertise in relevant methodologies, theories, and conceptual development. A sound knowledge of construction management at industry, organisation, and project level, including the multiple stages of projects. Industry experience in construction management. Strong skills in working with students, communication, construction management, modern construction and related activities, and a pro-active nature relative to students, academia, industry, professional association, and statutory council liaison and development. Research and publishing skills. Research supervision skills. REQUIREMENTS An appropriate doctoral qualification in Construction Management. Possess 6-10 years of higher education experience as a Professor and additional 2 years at the Associate Professor level, with at least 5 years in Construction Management.
