JOB PROFILE: JUNIOR TRANSPORT CONTROLLER Location: Cape Town Region (Remote / Field-Based)Reporting to: ManagerOperational Scope: 10 Owner-Drivers | Multiple Clients | Port & DeliveriesROLE OVERVIEWThe Junior Transport Controller provide support in the coordination, monitoring, and control of transport operations across multiple owner-drivers and clients. Working within a broker environment, the role focuses on assisting with daily dispatch, documentation, and driver communication to ensure smooth cargo movement between ports, depots, and final destinations.This is a hands-on, learning-focused role that involves contributing to operational and administrative tasks while developing skills in transport management. Responsibilities include supporting senior staff with real-time dispatch, assisting with system updates, and facilitating client communication. The role provides exposure to operational challenges, with opportunities to build confidence in managing transport coordination and documentation processes.Key Responsibilities (Junior Transport Controller)1. Dispatch & Transport CoordinationAssist with planning and coordinating daily dispatch operations under guidance from senior staff.Support load allocation based on driver availability, routes, and client requirements.Monitor pickups and deliveries and report progress or issues to supervisors.Escalate changes, delays, or breakdowns to senior controllers for resolution.Help ensure compliance with pickup and delivery instructions.2. Port & System OperationsProvide support with container and cargo bookings (Navis/Transnet exposure advantageous).Assist in monitoring port movements, releases, and gate activity.Capture key operational details such as pickup/delivery times, container numbers, and load references.Update systems during live operations under supervision.3. Owner-Driver ManagementLiaise with owner-drivers daily to relay instructions and updates.Communicate changes and client requirements clearly.Support monitoring of driver punctuality and reliability.Assist with basic vehicle checks and escalate defects or risks.Help ensure drivers follow safety and operational standards.4. Documentation & POD ControlCollect Proof of Delivery (PODs) from drivers.Check PODs for completeness and accuracy before submission.Deliver PODs to clients or office administrators for invoicing.Follow up on missing PODs when required.Maintain organised records of completed and pending deliveries.5. Client Communication & ServiceAct as a junior point of contact between clients, drivers, and port stakeholders.Provide delivery updates and confirmations when requested.Assist with handling client queries regarding delays or documentation.Support professional service levels across multiple clients.6. Reporting & AdministrationUse Excel, Word, and email for trip tracking, load summaries, and POD updates.Maintain accurate operational records under supervision.Prepare basic operational updates or summaries when required.Assist with posting live operational updates on designated WhatsApp groups.7. Compliance, Risk & Operational ControlFollow correct procedures for load collection, delivery confirmations, and documentation handling.Identify and escalate operational risks to senior staff.Assist in checking that vehicles are roadworthy and compliant.Support safe working practices across the driver network.8.
