About the Role
The Regional Head Underwriter will provide strategic and operational leadership across the regional underwriting function, driving performance through data analysis, coaching, and optimisation. This role requires a strong leader who can manage and grow key insurer, binder, and broker partnerships, while ensuring effective resourcing and workload management.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and grow key insurer, binder, and broker partnerships
- Drive underwriting performance through data analysis, coaching, and optimisation
- Lead, motivate, and develop underwriting teams to ensure effective resourcing and workload management
- Act as an escalation point for complex underwriting and broker queries
- Approve personal lines quotations with discounts exceeding 40% of black-box rates
- Approve Binder Facility new business quotations
- Approve Binder Facility renewals exceeding loss ratio thresholds
- Commercial endorsements where rates differ from renewal rates
- Oversee book take-ons, portfolio movements, and transitions
- Ensure effective implementation of underwriting and operational changes from insurers
- Support HR with recruitment, performance management, promotions, and disciplinary processes
- Provide cover for other Regional Heads when required
Requirements
- A degree or diploma in Insurance, Risk Management, or a related discipline
- RE5 (FAIS Regulatory Examination) Class of Business Training (where applicable)
- 10 years experience in underwriting, including senior or leadership roles
- Strong exposure to binder environments and underwriting governance
- Ability to speak English and at least 1 African language
