About the Role

The University of Cape Town Lung Institute (Pty) Ltd is seeking a Community Health Worker to join our team in Masiphumalele. This 12-month Fixed Term Contract position will require you to work closely with patients, provide education and support, and assist with data collection and administrative duties.

Key Responsibilities

  • Recruitment, screening and consenting of study participants (includes adult and children) in the community
  • Retention and follow-up of study participants (to attend appointments)
  • Assist participants in maintaining asthma diaries to track symptoms and triggers
  • Guide participants in self-monitoring techniques and provide education on maintaining health records
  • Do home visits to participants
  • Keep Research Nurse informed of participants and report any irregularities
  • Data Collection and administrative duties – questionnaires, data entry and verification
  • Maintain database of participant information and complete participant progress reports as required
  • Provide education and support to participants during the screening process
  • Educate participants on the studies
  • Drive to destinations to drop off and/or collect participants and/or documents as instructed by line manager
  • Ensure correct handling and transport of specimens to the relevant laboratories.
  • Set up and manage air quality monitors (personal and household) and community-based spore trap

Requirements

  • Grade 12 / National Senior Certificate or Equivalent
  • Experience in a clinic / health care environment, working with both adult and paediatric patients
  • Sound knowledge of recruiting area (Masiphumalele)
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Fluent in English and another South African Language
  • Valid Driver’s License (advantageous)
  • Computer Literacy (MS Office, Internet and electronic Data Management Systems advantageous)
