Port Elizabeth: Utilities Engineer

Job Description

Key Responsibilities Lead the operation, maintenance, and optimisation of all utilities infrastructure, including: Boilers (5-ton industrial boiler systems) Ammonia refrigeration plants and chillers Air compressors, cooling towers, glycol systems, and water plants Generators and backup power systems Process utilities, including chilled water and steam distribution Implement preventative and predictive maintenance strategies to minimise downtime and ensure uninterrupted plant operations. Manage utilities performance, including service intervals, compliance records, calibration schedules, and safety documentation. Conduct root-cause analysis, 5-Why investigations, and implement sustainable corrective actions. Lead and mentor technical teams, ensuring effective daily maintenance planning, task allocation, and shift support. Collaborate with production, quality, and safety teams to resolve technical issues and support continuous improvement. Oversee utilities-related projects, upgrades, and installation of new equipment. Ensure full compliance with statutory and audit requirements for pressure vessels, boilers, burners, ammonia systems, and electrical installations. Maintain spare parts, budget controls, contractor management, and adherence to safety procedures. Qualifications & Experience Required Trade Test: Instrumentation Mechanician (essential) N2N4 Electrical/Instrumentational training or equivalent technical qualifications 10 years experience in utilities management within manufacturing, FMCG, dairy, beverage, or industrial environments Strong experience working with: Ammonia refrigeration systems (GEA compressors, ice banks, glycol chillers) Industrial boilers and burner control systems Air compressors (Kaeser, Airstream, high-pressure and low-pressure systems) Water treatment plants and filtration systems PLCs, HMIs, VSDs, and instrumentation calibration Proven leadership experience in maintenance or technical management roles Excellent problem-solving, project management, and communication skills Ability to work under pressure in high-volume production operations Skills & Competencies Advanced fault finding across mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation systems Strong understanding of industrial thermoprocessing equipment and NEC electrical standards Ability to interpret and update technical documentation, calibration certificates, and compliance reports Hands-on expertise with PLC backups, HMI support, and control system upgrades Exceptional planning, analytical thinking, and attention to detail Ability to drive continuous improvement, optimise process efficiencies, and reduce downtime
