Our Client, a leader in the Manufacturing Industry, is seeking to employ an experienced “Fabrication Preparation Shop Supervisor” to their team based in Benoni, Johannesburg. The ‘prep shop’ is essentially a sheet-metal type fabrication floor where plates are plasma cut , guillotined , bent on bending press ,flanges and stub ends are made, fittings manufactured, where profiles are formed or rolled and in general where small and large tank components are made.
Preferred knowledge required (machinery and fabrication processes):
- CNC plasma / Guillotine cutting.
- Press brake bending.
- Profile forming.
- Conventional plate / Pipe rolling.
- Radial drilling.
- Drill press operation.
- TIG / MIG welding.
- Manual plasma cutting.
- Overhead crane operation.
- Forklift operation.

Overview:
- The key factors to consider with the potential candidates applying for this role; is how well they can organize, plan and execute technical actions on the shop floor.
- Candidates have to be highly motivated, driven with timelines and be able to effectively lead a team of artisans such as boilermakers, machine operators , welders , polishers, etc.
Requirements:
- Trade Test or Technical Diploma is an advantage.
- Supervisory qualification is an advantage.
- Minimum 8 years work experience with a proven track record in a fabrication facility is essential.
- Knowledge of the OHS Act is required.
- Knowledge of more than one official language is an advantage.
- Experience with all facets of steel fabrication.
- Knowledge of welding procedures and/or codes.
Ability and willingness to learn advanced technology and machinery:
- Orbital pipe welding.
- De-coiling and vertical rolling of stainless steel.
- Automated plasma TIG welding of stainless steel.
- Automated cone formation.
- Tank end flanging.
- Tank end pressing.
Responsibilities, but not limited to:
- Attend daily meetings with the Production Manager to receive job information packs and schedules.
- Oversee the daily fabrication schedule in the preparation area.
- Issue job files, drawings, and work instructions to artisans.
- Supervise all artisans in the preparation shop to ensure work instructions are followed.
- Ensure all tasks meet quality standards and job specifications.
- Conduct daily shop-floor toolbox talks.
- Ensure conformance with DSTIs in line with the OHS Act.
- Supervise and coordinate artisans to ensure schedules provided by the Production Manager are met.
- Supervise and coordinate welding operations within the preparation shop.
- Ensure adherence to boiler making and welding standards.
- Coordinate and supervise all NDTs within the preparation shop.
- Maintain a safe and clean working environment in line with safety and housekeeping standards.
- Maintain tools and equipment to required standards.
- Provide daily and weekly progress reports to the Production Manager.
- Maintain job files, work instructions, and NDT documentation.
