Lead miscellaneous, small and large projects in the Electrical Engineering function and/or support the Principal Engineer/Lead Engineer in managing Electrical Engineering on projects.  This required independence in approach; it demands a considerable degree of originality, engineering ingenuity and judgement, and good knowledge of Electrical Engineering as demanded by the project.

The Senior Electrical Engineer is responsible for the control and monitoring the progress and quality of assigned tasks within the Electrical Engineering discipline of the project, including the supervision of Engineers and Junior Engineers

To carry out all electrical engineering and design work in accordance with agreed codes and practices that meets all requirements of the contract.  Also, to ensure all work is carried out within agreed schedules, budgets and procedures as per the company Engineering Directive.

To conduct engineering and design work independently and in accordance with the Client’s engineering and project governance set out in the Technical Stewardship Standard.
 
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
 
Electrical Engineering and Design:

• Executing electrical engineering and design duties for electrical equipment as required by the project
• Utilise approved software and other analysis tools (like validated spreadsheets) for the design of electrical equipment.
• Undertake electrical engineering and design activities required by the project, which could include system and/or equipment calculations, electrical datasheets, engineering requisitions, electrical equipment lists, technical bid evaluations, electrical design criteria, input into the Basis of Design document, SEAL plan input, relevant design drawings and other electrical engineering related deliverables.
• Liaising with other discipline engineers on technical issues and engineering matters, including the provision of discipline specific advice on issues not covered by design guides.

Project Execution:

• When assigned, act as lead Electrical Engineer on projects, which require the supervision and guidance of a team of electrical engineers to deliver electrical engineering deliverables against a schedule and within a fixed budget allowance.
• When assigned, Lead Electrical Engineering activities on miscellaneous, small and large projects and providing technical leadership during all phases of projects (conceptual engineering, pre-feasibility engineering, basic engineering and detailed engineering/design).
• When assigned as Lead Electrical Engineer, schedule, control and expedite work assigned to the Electrical Engineering team on a project.
• Prepare, coordinate, assist, review and/or approve electrical engineering deliverables, as defined by the project Discipline Task and Deliverable Plan (DTDP).
• Review and comment on vendor documents (incl. equipment and packages) for compliance to purchase order/contract requirements as well as to integrate equipment into the broader plant.
• Liaising with Principal Electrical Engineer and/or Manager Electrical Engineering, to establish technical direction where not provided by codes and standards.
• Support the National Discipline Manager Electrical Engineer and/or Specialist Principal Electrical Engineer/s to establish the scope of work and man-hour estimates for projects and/or proposal.
• Identify and offer recommendations of new technology developments which will be applicable in
• providing more cost-effective facilities or solutions.

 
Technical Stewardship and SEAL compliance:

• Ensure compliance with the RSA Technical Stewardship Plan, specified engineering codes, standards, procedures, quality plans etc.
• Lead/participate in technical peer reviews of Electrical Engineering work and deliverables on projects and close-out findings of these reviews.
• Responsible for personal safety and to adhere to safe working practices. Understand and implement all legal requirements as required by the Occupational Health and Safety Act and/or the Mines Health and Safety Act within Electrical Engineering.

Financial / Cost Management:

• When assigned as Lead Electrical Engineer to a project manage man-hours of Electrical Engineering teams on projects and ensure that quality work is completed on schedule within the available budget.
• Assist with the compilation of proposals, including tender clarifications, meetings, write-ups and man-hour estimates.

Training and Development:

• Responsible for his professional development as engineer.
• Act as mentor to more junior electrical engineers.
• Knowledge sharing.

REQUIREMENTS OF THE JOB:
 
Minimum Qualifications:

• BSc, BEng or BTech from a recognised institute.
• Registered as a Professional Engineer or Professional Engineering Technologist with ECSA.

Experience:

• Minimum 8 years (BSc/BEng/BEng Tech/BTech) or 6 years (MSc) of post qualification experience.
• Experience in Mining, Minerals and Chemicals, Hydrocarbons, Power and Public Infrastructure industries essential, across operations, design and project execution roles.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE JOB:

• Will be required to visit customer sites, supplier offices/workshops as well as construction sites.
• Will be required to conduct inspections at supplier workshops, as well as conduct inspections on construction sites.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS ATTACHED TO THE JOB:

• May be required to travelling internationally to other Client offices, customer and/or supplier sites.
