Job Summary
Requirements:
- Preferably in recovery, with a strong understanding of the 12 Step Program.
- A licensed social worker is preferred, though not required.
- Associate degree in chemical dependency counselling, bachelor`s degree with relevant coursework, and/or Master’s in counselling preferred.
- IC and RC International Certification is a strong advantage.
- Experience in treating substance abuse and co-occurring mental health disorders.
- Familiarity with electronic health records; EMR proficiency is a plus.
- Understanding of ASAM assessment and admission criteria is preferred.
- Working knowledge of SANCA best practice indicators.
- Strong grasp of drug/alcohol testing protocols for treatment monitoring.
- Fluency in English and/or Afrikaans (written and spoken).
- Compassionate, empathetic, and professional in client interactions.
- Must have own transport.
Responsibilities:
- Provide mental health and addiction counselling and support to individuals and families.
- Answer inquiries and phone calls regarding available programs and services.
- Manage all aspects of client cases from intake to discharge.
- Conduct comprehensive evaluations of patients’ mental and physical health.
- Develop and implement individualized treatment and recovery plans.
- Facilitate both individual and group therapy sessions.
- Monitor and assess treatment progress over time.
- Collaborate with psychiatrists, nurses, social workers, and the broader multidisciplinary team.
- Identify and address behaviours that hinder recovery.
- Assist caregivers in managing SUD-related behaviours.
- Deliver counselling on SUD causes, symptoms, effects of substance use, and prevention strategies.
- Prepare detailed needs and risk assessments.
- Demonstrate a strong understanding of crisis intervention and trauma-informed care.
- Manage client documentation using Electronic Management Record (EMR) systems.
- Make and accept referrals to and from external support agencies.
- Maintain strict confidentiality of all client information and records.
- Coordinate and deliver educational workshops on mental health and addiction-related topics.
- Participate in relevant community and organizational committees.
- Support clients in identifying treatment needs and completing admission processes.
- Evaluate treatment effectiveness and ensure adherence to ADAT/ASAM criteria.
- Arrange transportation for clients when required.
- Develop and lead structured group programs (e.g., Relapse Prevention, CBT).
- Conduct program needs assessments and evaluations, including data analysis.
