Purpose of the Role
The UC Engineer will be responsible for the design, documentation, planning, development, maintenance planning, and implementation guidance of Networking and Communications solutions, services, and architectures.
The role includes participation in infrastructure planning to ensure secure provisioning of network and communication services that meet business and customer requirements. The successful candidate will guide the development of network designs, strategies, architectures, and documentation aligned to organisational strategy.
This role may encompass all aspects of communications infrastructure, including:
- Multiple platform network integration
- Internal and external networks
- Mobile, public and private networks
- Internet/Intranet
- Call centres
The incumbent will set goals, monitor work, and evaluate results to ensure objectives and operational requirements are met in line with the organisation’s mission.
Formal Education
- Grade 12 (NQF 4) – Essential
- Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma (NQF 6) in an ICT-related field – Advantageous
- Technical field support experience in a large corporate environment – Advantageous
- PABX – Mandatory
- NEC IS3000 experience – Mandatory
- NEC 3C experience – Mandatory
Experience Required
- Experience in Telecommunications service support, delivery, or field support
- Strong experience in PABX and voice gateways (e.g., AudioCodes, SBC)
- NEC IS3000 experience – Mandatory
- NEC 3C experience – Mandatory
- Proven ability to present and articulate network-related knowledge to management and executive audiences
- Advanced capability to guide Network Specialists in complex 2nd level diagnostics and fault finding on Voice technologies
- Hands-on experience in live VoIP production environments together with traditional PBX systems (NEC IS3000, SV, Mitel)
- Exposure to Routing & Switching, UC, VoIP, VC and IPT technologies
- Knowledge of:
- Windows 10x / XP
- MS Servers
- MS Office
- Anti-Virus support
- Internet Explorer & Internet Mail
- Microsoft Patches
- Hardware maintenance (IS3000 PABX systems)
- LAN administration (SQL, User Profile Management)
- Server maintenance (Hardware, Software, DHCP, DNS, Security, TCP/IP, FTP) – Advantageous
- SBC / Fortinet firewall experience – Advantageous
Technical / Legal Certifications
- A+
- N+
- VOIP (System specific) – Advantageous
Key Responsibilities
- Interface with Pre-Sales to establish world-class networking products, solutions, and services
- Demonstrate strong network design and VoIP engineering capabilities
- Assess and advise on technical alternatives, balancing technical limitations with operational realities
- Guide advanced high-level problem management processes (ITIL aligned)
- Establish monitoring, event generation, ticket logging, and incident reporting mechanisms
- Develop processes and procedures for Voice services in collaboration with Network Specialists
- Analyse draft solution proposals for technical viability and fit-for-purpose delivery
- Identify suitable solutions where requirements fall outside personal expertise
- Ensure technology alignment with client needs and educate clients on implemented solutions
- Provide support to other customers/sites when required (occasional travel may be necessary)
