Job Description

A renowned company in Port Elizabeth is seeking an experienced Telecommunications Technician to join their growing technical team. This is a hands-on, telecoms-first role focused on VoIP, SIP, PBX systems, and voice-centric networking. The successful candidate must have a deep understanding of how voice networks function end-to-end — from ISP handoff through to handset — and be confident working on business-critical communication systems where downtime is not an option. Role Overview You will be responsible for the installation, configuration, support, and optimisation of customer and internal telecommunications environments. This role is not general IT support and requires strong, practical telecoms experience, particularly with 3CX, Yeastar, SIP trunking, VLANs, routing, and QoS. Required Skills & Experience Proven experience with 3CX and/or Yeastar Strong understanding of VoIP, SIP, RTP, NAT, and firewalls Experience configuring VLANs and QoS for voice traffic Solid knowledge of IP networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, subnetting, routing) Experience with business-grade routers and switches Strong troubleshooting skills and attention to detail Comfortable working on customer sites and at heights Valid Driver’s Licence and own vehicle Key Responsibilities VoIP & PBX Systems Install, configure, and maintain 3CX and Yeastar PBX systems Provision and manage SIP trunks, DID numbers, and call routing Configure IVRs, ring groups, call queues, voicemail, and call reporting Perform PBX upgrades, backups, restores, and migrations Diagnose and resolve call quality issues (jitter, latency, packet loss, echo) Telecommunications Infrastructure Deploy and support IP telephony solutions for business clients Configure and troubleshoot SIP, RTP, NAT, and firewall rules Install and provision IP phones, softphones, and DECT systems Integrate PBX platforms with CRM and third-party systems where required Voice-Focused Networking Configure VLANs for voice traffic Implement and troubleshoot QoS prioritisation Work with routers, switches, and firewalls (MikroTik, Ubiquiti, TP-Link, etc.) Ensure correct subnetting, routing, and NAT policies Identify and resolve network bottlenecks affecting voice performance Fault Finding & Support Diagnose telecom faults across LAN, WAN, ISP, and PBX layers Perform remote and on-site troubleshooting Analyse call logs, SIP traces, and packet captures Maintain system uptime and respond urgently to outages Installations & Projects Perform on-site telecom installations and commissioning Assist with structured cabling, cabinet builds, and equipment mounting Support project rollouts, upgrades, and migrations Security & Reliability Secure PBX systems against SIP attacks and toll fraud Maintain firmware updates across telecom equipment Ensure backup and disaster recovery procedures are in place
