Job Description

This Role will be responsible for supporting a safe working environment across all operations. It involves assisting in monitoring workplace activities to ensure compliance with occupational health and safety (OHS) and Mine Health and Safety (MHS) regulations, Construction Regulations (CR), company policies, and best practices. The Junior Safety Officer will perform hands-on safety activities, conduct site visits and safety audits, assist with incident investigations, support the delivery of safety training, and contribute to the continuous improvement of safety standards. Assist in identifying all statutory and regulatory legislation applicable to the company and its operations, and help ensure the organisation is aware of and complies with all legal requirements relating to workplace activities, plant, equipment, and substances. Support the establishment and delivery of annual Health & Safety training programmes for all personnel across all sites, including Head Office. Help raise non-conformances and follow through on the closure of any identified issues. Analyse records (incidents, audits, reports) to identify negative or positive trends and assist in implementing corrective actions to prevent recurrence. Support the maintenance of favourable and safe working conditions across all operations. Assist in the development and implementation of Health and Safety strategies, including objectives and targets, in collaboration with managers. Conduct site visits, audits, and inspections to evaluate SHE performance and report on trends. Promote a safety-focused culture, emphasizing the importance of Safety, Health, Environment, and Quality (SHEQ) within the company. Provide support to managers and sites on all SHE-related matters. Maintain and assist in building strategic relationships with SHE stakeholders, specialists, and clients. Ensure, as far as reasonably practicable, adherence to all SHE legislation and requirements, including legal appointments as per OHSA/MHSA/CR. Continuously contribute new methods and ideas to improve workplace safety, health, and environmental practices. Oversee site-specific safety compliance and the implementation of safety measures. Ensure all employee training, medicals, and inductions are up to date. Maintain accountability for site-specific safety files. Assist with risk assessments and method statement reviews. Conduct safety inductions for new and existing employees. Support incident and accident investigations, helping to identify causes and recommend preventive actions. Perform any other reasonable SHE-related tasks as required including conducting weekly Toolbox Talks and inspections. SACPCMP Registration Grade 12 and a minimum NQF5 qualification in Occupational Health and Safety Management 5 years experience in a similar role in the mining, construction or manufacturing industry Valid Drivers License Experience with incident/accident investigation and hazard analysis and control Understanding of legal health and safety guidelines and regulations Ability to produce reports and develop relevant policies and procedures Strong knowledge of data analysis and risk assessment Willingness and ability to travel to various project sites as required Ability to remain patient and adaptable under uncertainty or changing plans Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain relationships with stakeholders, especially on mining sites
