Job Summary
Scope of Work
To lead the development and execution of an integrated corporate affairs strategy that protects, promotes, and enhances the Group’s reputation and license to operate across all markets, including Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and Botswana. This includes oversight of stakeholder engagement, corporate communications, media relations, government and regulatory affairs, community relations, issues and crisis management, and sustainability positioning. The role ensures the Group’s voice is consistently aligned to its strategic objectives, supports business continuity, and strengthens trust with stakeholders including governments, media, communities, investors, and civil society.
Roles & Responsibilities
• Corporate Strategy and Leadership
• Develop and lead the Group Corporate Affairs strategy, ensuring alignment with Group vision, business priorities, and risk landscape.
• Act as the Group’s senior advisor on matters related to reputation, stakeholder relations, policy, and communications.
• Partner with the Executive team to shape and position corporate messages in support of strategic projects, market expansion, M&A activity, and sustainability goals.
• Stakeholder Engagement and Reputation Management
• Lead the development and continuous improvement of the Group Stakeholder Engagement Framework and Stakeholder Engagement Plans at Group and country level.
• Build and maintain influential relationships with key external stakeholders, including government officials, regulators, media, community leaders, NGOs, and industry bodies.
• Monitor stakeholder sentiment, public policy trends, and socio-political developments that may impact business operations or reputation.
• Champion stakeholder-centric culture across the business by embedding stakeholder insights into decision-making and reporting structures.
• Government and Regulatory Affairs
• Lead strategic engagement with government and regulatory stakeholders to build trust, inform policy outcomes, and ensure proactive advocacy on key business issues.
• Represent the Group in high-level government, legislative, and industry forums.
• Work closely with Legal and Compliance to monitor and influence regulatory developments in the Group’s operating jurisdictions.
• Media and Communications
• Oversee Group-wide corporate communications, including media relations, messaging, public statements, and brand narrative.
• Develop a Group-wide Issues and Crisis Communication Framework to support business continuity and reputational protection.
• Act as the spokesperson or media liaison where appropriate and provide media training for executives and senior leaders.
• Sustainability, Citizenship, and ESG
• Collaborate with Sustainability and ESG teams to align communication and stakeholder strategies with environmental and social impact objectives.
• Lead narrative development and stakeholder communication around the Group’s sustainability initiatives, social license to operate, and ESG reporting.
• Internal Collaboration and Leadership
• Collaborate with internal functions (e.g. Legal, Compliance, ESG, HR, Operations) to ensure coherent corporate positioning and integrated risk management.
• Build capacity and capability within the Corporate Affairs function, including oversight of teams or embedded roles in regional operations.
• Promote internal alignment and accountability for managing key stakeholder relationships across business units.
• People Leadership and Development
• Build and mentor a diverse team of corporate affairs experts, fostering a high-performance and values-based culture.
• Lead succession planning and skills development in the function
• Promote a culture of accountability and continuous improvement within the function.
Qualifications and Experience
• Postgraduate qualification in Corporate Communications, Public Affairs or Strategic Management.
• Minimum 15 years’ experience in corporate affairs, public relations, communications, or government affairs.
• Deep understanding of how corporate affairs contributes to enterprise value, risk management, and stakeholder trust.
• Ability to align reputation strategy with overall business objectives and socio-political realities.
• Proven ability to build trust-based relationships with senior government officials, regulators, media, civil society, and internal leaders.
• Skilled in navigating complex stakeholder environments, including cross-border and politically sensitive contexts.
• High emotional intelligence, empathy, and cultural awareness.
• Able to adapt messaging and engagement strategies to diverse audiences across geographies.
