About the Role
The Armature Winder plays a vital role in bringing electric motors to life by skillfully winding, repairing, and rebuilding armatures, stators, and coils. This hands-on role requires precision, attention to detail, and craftsmanship, where every finished motor is built with pride and performance in mind.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervisor to verify correct material to be used in accordance with the customer specification.
- Perform electrical winding and rewinding of traction motors, generators, and other rotating electrical equipment used in rail applications.
- Inspect, diagnose, and repair faults in windings, coils, and insulation systems.
- Ensure adherence to technical specifications and manufacturer guidelines during winding and repair processes.
- Assemble rewound components, ensuring proper alignment and balancing of rotor and stator assemblies.
- Conduct electrical and mechanical tests to verify the integrity and performance of rewound equipment.
- Troubleshoot and resolve any issues identified during testing to ensure quality and reliability.
- Participate in the maintenance and overhaul of traction motors and related equipment according to scheduled maintenance plans.
- Clean, lubricate, and replace worn or damaged components as necessary to extend equipment life and maintain optimal performance.
- Document maintenance activities, inspections, and repairs accurately for record-keeping and compliance purposes.
- Adhere strictly to safety protocols and procedures to ensure a safe working environment.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and industry standards for electrical equipment maintenance and repair.
- Conduct quality inspections of repaired and rewound equipment to ensure compliance with specifications and standards.
- Identify opportunities for process improvement and implement corrective actions to enhance quality and efficiency.
- Collaborate effectively with other technicians, engineers, and operational staff to achieve maintenance and operational goals.
- Provide guidance and support to junior winders and apprentices as needed.
Requirements
- Matric Certificate.
- Proven experience as a Winder or similar role in electrical winding and repair, preferably within the rail industry.
- Certification or vocational training in electrical engineering or a related field preferred.
- Familiarity with safety standards and regulations applicable to electrical equipment and maintenance.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and overtime as required.
- Willingness to travel occasionally for site visits, inspections, or project assignments.
- +5 years’ relevant experience
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with a keen attention to detail.
- Strong knowledge of electrical winding techniques, insulation systems, and electrical testing procedures.
- Ability to interpret technical drawings, diagrams, and specifications related to electrical equipment.
- Proficiency in using winding machines, hand tools, and electrical testing equipment.
- Effective communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
