Job Description

Our structural engineering firm is looking to appoint a Structural Engineering Technician for our Hermanus Office. The Technician will assist in drawing, drafting and analysing the components of buildings and infrastructure. Key Responsibilities Design & Drafting: Create detailed structural drawings, schematics and BIM (Building Information Modeling) models using software like AutoCAD and Revit. Engineering Analysis: Assist senior engineers by performing load calculations, evaluating material stresses (e.g. concrete, steel and timber) and utilising analysis tools like PROKON. Site Inspections: Visit construction sites to verify that work aligns with structural plans, inspect existing building conditions and prepare technical site reports. Compliance: Ensure all structural designs and modifications meet local building codes, such as the SANS regulations in South Africa. Project Support: Help gather data, prepare cost and material estimates and maintain organised documentation throughout the project lifecycle. Qualifications and Requirements Education: Minimum National Diploma (NDip) or an equivalent technical qualification. Software Proficiency: Strong working knowledge of CAD, BIM and structural analysis programs (e.g. PROKON, AutoCAD and Revit). Industry Knowledge: An understanding of construction methods, building materials and relevant engineering standards. Licensure: Professional registration as a Candidate or Professional Technician/Technologist with bodies like the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) is preferred. Core Skills & Competencies Technical Accuracy: High attention to detail, especially when calculating dimensions, loads and material specifications. Problem Solving: Ability to identify structural flaws and propose practical, safe and cost-effective solutions.
