About the Role
The General Manager: Mining Open Cast will oversee the entire mining operations, developing and implementing the Mines strategy to ensure sustainable operation and optimal resource utilization. This role requires strategic thinking, strong leadership skills, and excellent communication abilities to drive business growth and compliance.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement the Mines strategy in relation to Production, Engineering, and Resource Management.
- Analyse and scrutinise operational plans for the entire mining operations to drive positive action towards achieving operational goals.
- Scour the market for new technologies to find and implement more efficient and effective mining methods and processes.
- Proactively identify interconnected problems, develop alternative solutions, and put in place contingency plans to resolve value chain conflicts.
- Review and align various departmental strategies (Production, MRM, and Engineering) to ensure alignment with business intentions.
Requirements
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent leadership and communication abilities.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with multiple priorities.
- Strong understanding of mining operations, production management, and financial management.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent (NQF7) in Mining (preferred but not required)/Geology/Engineering.
- Blasting Engineering qualifications with emphasis on open pit.
- Mine manager’s certificate.
- Open cast blasting ticket.
- Member of Mine Manager Affiliations.

Mine and Production Management
- Develop comprehensive mining plans and strategies by analysing current operating functionality and identifying ways to optimise production, maximise resource recovery, and minimise costs.
- Establish the load and haul section of the mine by implementing and driving achievement of planned production tonnage targets while minimising safety and production incidents.
Operational Management
- Approve strategic plans for the section by compiling comprehensive operational plans.
- Keep abreast of changes in relevant guidelines and legislation to validate and oversee implementation of policies, processes, and procedures.
People Management
- Create a conducive work environment by applying Human Resources policies and procedures to ensure optimum performance.
- Lead the team according to the Company’s leadership principles and values throughout the entire employee life cycle (performance management, reward etc).
Stakeholder Relations
- Build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders to manage expectations and timelines.
- Represent the Company in negotiations, discussions, and forums by engaging with all respective stakeholders.
