About the Role
A leading food manufacturing company is seeking an experienced Food Safety Officer to join their team in Pretoria West. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring food safety and product quality within the factory and surrounding environment, ensuring compliance with the requirements of the Food Safety Management System.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, maintain, and update the Food Safety Management System in accordance with FSSC 2200
- Write, update, and review documents, procedures, and policies required by the Food Safety Management System
- Grade incoming raw materials
- Perform document control for both hard copy and electronic records
- Record non-conformances and conduct root cause investigations
- Follow up on implementation of corrective actions and changes related to non-conformances within the factory
- Conduct internal, customer, and certification audits
- Perform internal inspections and audits according to schedule and record results
- Report non-conformances, follow up on related actions, and verify close-out
- Log glass breakage, needle breakage, and blood spillage incidents and ensure clearance is conducted for production to continue
- Conduct traceability exercises and mock recalls, including reporting as per schedule
- Perform CCP troubleshooting and product learning
- Act as the appointed pest control representative
- Conduct daily verification of PRPs, CCPs, and oPRPs to ensure timeous release of final product
- Arrange quality meetings and record and distribute minutes to the Quality Team
- Release products and sign off COA and COC documentation, ensuring accurate compilation
- Ensure consumable inventory levels are recorded and maintained and cleaning equipment is replaced as required
- Order laboratory and factory consumables
- Verify metal-detectable items upon receipt
- Arrange calibration of factory and laboratory equipment according to schedule
- Verify receiving and dispatch inspections
- Conduct training in accordance with the training programme
- Manage the environmental monitoring programme, including verification swabbing, recording, and trending of results
- Ensure ATP testing is conducted and recorded as per schedule
- Ensure microbiological, chemical, and physical tests are executed accurately and timeously according to sampling plans
- Verify microbiological, chemical, and physical test reports as results become available and file accordingly
- Ensure re-testing is conducted where required and communicate out-of-specification results
- Perform daily verification of product test results and report deviations to management and confirm related actions
- Compile and update on-hold, rework, and reject lists and manage correct labelling of affected stock
- Record all inspections and audits accurately and timeously
- Verify daily tasks and checklists to ensure deviations are reported timeously and corrective actions are implemented
- Report any raw material, packaging, product, test, inspection, or food safety-related deviations to management
- Ensure no product affected by a non-conformity is released without required approval
- Enforce food safety, quality, and change procedures across food manufacturing operations
Requirements
- Qualification in Food Science, Food Technology, or a similar field
- Minimum 57 years experience in a food manufacturing (milling) environment
- Experience with implementation and updating of a Food Safety Management System
- FSSC 22000 training and experience
- Root cause analysis training
- Experience managing non-conformances, conducting root cause investigations, and implementing corrective actions
- Quality and food safety awareness and implementation
- Strong problem-solving skills
- High attention to detail
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Good time management skills and sense of urgency
