CORE PURPOSE OF JOB

The Faculty of Education at Nelson Mandela University invites applications for a Senior Lecturer position in isiXhosa. The successful candidate will contribute to the academic excellence of the faculty by teaching undergraduate and postgraduate courses in isiXhosa home language as well as at conversational level. The Senior Lecturer will also engage in research activities, supervise student projects, and participate in the administration and development of educational programs within the Secondary School Department.

The incumbent will be required to:

• Develop and deliver undergraduate and postgraduate courses in isiXhosa home language as well at conversational level.
• Design course curriculum, instructional materials, and assessment strategies that promote active learning and student engagement.
• Conduct research regarding isiXhosa language teaching or related fields, leading to publications in peer- reviewed journals and presentations at conferences.
• Supervise graduate students` research projects, theses, and dissertations, providing guidance and support throughout the research process. An ability to supervise postgraduate students in isiXhosa will be an added advantage.
• Participate in academic administration, including serving on faculty committees, contributing to curriculum development, and assisting with accreditation processes.
• Mentor junior faculty members and provide leadership in fostering a culture of academic excellence, diversity, and inclusion within the faculty and university community.
• Engage in professional development activities to stay abreast of advancements in isiXhosa language teaching, educational pedagogy, and research methodologies.
• Collaborate with colleagues within the department and across disciplines to promote interdisciplinary research and educational initiatives.
• Represent the department and the faculty at academic conferences, workshops, and public events, contributing to the university`s reputation as a center of excellence in isiXhosa studies.
• Contribute to community outreach programs and initiatives that promote the use and preservation of isiXhosa language and culture in local and regional communities.

• Facilitate learning, teaching and assessment at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
• Conduct research and publish in peer-reviewed academic journals / academic platforms.

• Contribute to Faculty administration as required.

• Demonstrate sound knowledge and expertise in isiXhosa-related fields in education.
• Ability to facilitate teaching, learning and assessment of isiXhosa-related content to diverse cohorts of education undergraduate and postgraduate students.
• Ability to mentor junior faculty members and supervise postgraduate students. Ability to supervise postgraduate students in isiXhosa will be an added advantage.
• Possess the ability to develop a curriculum and teaching resources for the Method of isiXhosa offered in the Secondary School Education Department.
• Proficiently navigate and utilise the Moodle Learning Management Systems (LMS) to facilitate effective online teaching and learning experiences. This includes showing expertise in managing course materials, assignments, and assessments within the LMS platform, as well as providing technical support to students and colleagues. Additionally, demonstrate proficiency in customising and optimising the LMS interface to enhance user experience and engagement.
• Conduct scholarly work with a focus on teaching isiXhosa Home Language in the SP-FET phase.
• Possess effective communication skills (verbal and written), good facilitation, training and presentation skills.
• Demonstrate leadership abilities and experience in academic administration, such as serving on committees, supervising student projects, or managing academic programs.

REQUIREMENTS

• A Doctoral (PhD or D. Ed) or Masters (M. Ed) degree in Education, Linguistics, isiXhosa Language and Literature, or a related field.
• Significant experience in teaching isiXhosa language Home Language and literature at the university level.
• Experience in curriculum development, course design, and assessment strategies.
• Experience in teaching methodologies suitable for adult learners and diverse student populations.
• A strong record of research publications in reputable journals, preferably focusing on isiXhosa home language, conversational isiXhosa, linguistics, education, or related fields.
• Ability to secure research grants and engage in scholarly activities.
• Experience of teaching isiXhosa Home Language at school level will be an added advantage.
