About the Role

We are seeking a motivated and experienced Assistant Hardware Store Manager to support the daily operations of our store in Underberg, Southern Drakensberg, KZN. The ideal candidate will be responsible for driving sales, customer satisfaction, operational excellence, and team performance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct regular floor walks with management and identify daily priorities.
  • Communicate key focus areas to staff and ensure effective follow-up.
  • Analyse sales performance, margins, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Monitor waste, markdowns, shrinkage, and stock losses.
  • Review ranking reports daily and address problem areas.
  • Manage store expenses and control operational costs.
  • Ensure the highest quality products and service standards are maintained.
  • Identify out-of-stock items and ensure timely ordering.
  • Ensure promotions are correctly implemented and honoured across all advertising platforms.
  • Maintain pricing accuracy and product availability throughout the store.
  • Ensure the full product range is ordered and available on shelves.
  • Assist with cash control, balancing, and banking procedures.
  • Conduct receiving spot checks and ensure correct stock procedures are followed.
  • Check GRVs daily and ensure stock accuracy.
  • Ensure all staff comply with company policies, procedures, and store rules.
  • Drive total customer satisfaction through effective customer service practices.
  • Maintain a professional store image through:
  • Staff dress code compliance
  • Effective signage
  • Housekeeping standards
  • Be visible on the shop floor, especially during peak trading periods.
  • Proactively engage with customers and staff to identify opportunities and challenges
  • Provide clear direction and support to line managers and staff.
  • Assist with coaching, motivating, and developing the team.
  • Ensure ongoing communication with:
  • Staff members
  • Customers
  • Buyers
  • Distribution centres
  • Suppliers
  • Follow up on instructions and ensure deadlines and standards are achieved.
  • Assist with planning for upcoming events, promotions, and trading periods.
  • Assist in ensuring equipment, buildings, and store assets are maintained to company standards.
  • Identify maintenance requirements and ensure issues are addressed.

Requirements

  • Grade 12
  • Previous experience in a hardware, building supplies, or retail environment.
  • Knowledge of stock control, sales, and merchandising.
  • Strong organisational skills with excellent attention to detail.
  • Reliable, punctual, and well presented.
  • Strong work ethic and positive attitude.
  • Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced retail environment.
  • Confident decision-making and problem-solving ability.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Bilingual communication skills (isiZulu – an added advantage)
  • Experience managing or supervising staff.

Salary & Benefits

R20,000 – R30,000 per month (Negotiable depending on experience)
